Supported Server: IBM® System x3250 M2 Type 4190 and Type 4194

Follow the instructions in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the Tab key, Alt + a letter combination, or the mouse to make a selection.

References to optional hardware in this document do not imply support of that hardware. For information about supported options, see the ServerProven® information for your server at http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/.

1.0 What you will need

You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:

  • A registered copy of SUSE Linux® Enterprise Server 10 SP 1.
  • Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven list of supported options and part numbers for the server.
  • One blank diskette to create a BIOS code update diskette. You might need additional blank diskettes for firmware updates.
2.0 Where to download device drivers and files

You can download device drivers and files from the following sites:

You can download product specifications from the following sites:

3.0 Preparing the hardware

To prepare the hardware, update system firmware, and configure arrays, refer to the Installation Guide located at the IBM Support Web site at http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/.

4.0 Detailed installation instructions

To install SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP 1, complete the steps in the following sections.

4.1 Installing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP 1

To install SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP 1, complete the following steps:

  1. Insert the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP 1 CD 1 or DVD into the CD or DVD drive and boot the system.
  2. Select Installation, and then press Enter to load the kernel.
  3. Follow the detailed instructions from the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP 1 Documentation Guide located at http://www.novell.com/documentation/sles10/index.html to install SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP 1.
  4. If you are prompted to reboot, make sure that there is no bootable installation media accessible to the server, and then select OK.
  5. If you are installing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP 1 remotely then when the system reboots, in the boot screen press F3, scroll to 1024 x 768, and press Enter.

Notes:

  • For advanced installation topics, such as how to configure a network installation server, or how to configure an unattended installation, or how to configure a system for a XEN environment see the documentation that comes with the operating system or see the SUSE Linux online documentation.
  • Before installing any device drivers on the server, read Retain Tip H18618 at http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=psg1MIGR-53357.html
  • For obtaining the best performance from the remote display function via the IBM Remote supervisor Adapter II, the highest display resolution for IBM System x3250 M2 is configured up to 1024 x 768. To change the resolution, either select 1024 x 768 instead of 1280 x 1024 that is detected by YaST automatically in the hardware configuration during system configuration, or log in as root and using vi, or any other editor, edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Search for the following driver line in the device section:
    Section "Screen"

    DefaultDepth 16

    SubSection "Display"

    Depth 16

    Modes "1280x1024"

    EndSubSection

Replace "1280x1024" with "1024x768". The final section looks similar to this:

    Section "Screen"

    DefaultDepth 16

    SubSection "Display"

    Depth 16

    Modes "1024x768"

    EndSubSection

  • A tight installation sequence is presented in SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP 1. If you would like to install the XEN Virtual Machine Host Server, install the regular SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP 1 kernel first. After the installation is complete, install the XEN Virtual Machine Host Server packages through YaST -> Software -> Software management. The full installation (XEN kernel + regular SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP 1 kernel) from CD, DVD or network installation is not allowed as it will cause conflict and result in damage to the regular SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP 1 kernel.
4.2 Installing security and package updates

To install security and package updates, choose one of the following methods:

4.2.1 Local media update

After the installation, complete the following steps to upgrade the server to the latest service pack:

  1. Insert CD 1 of the service pack into the CD drive.
  2. Start YaST from the system menu or by typing yast in a terminal window or console.
  3. Type the root password when prompted.
  4. Select Patch CD Update.
  5. Select Next to continue.
  6. Enter the package manager, where most important patches are automatically selected for update. Make sure that the patches are selected correctly, and then select Accept to install the latest updates.
  7. After all updates are installed, select Finish.
4.2.2 Network Update

After the installation is complete and networking is set up, complete the following steps to install security and package updates. Run this update regularly or set up automatic updates to make sure that all software has the latest available security updates.

  1. Start YaST from the system menu or by typing yast in a terminal window or console.
  2. Type the root password when prompted.
  3. Select Online Update.
  4. Change any server settings needed for the environment, and then select Next to continue.
  5. If the Authorization prompt is displayed, type your user name and password for the SUSE Linux Maintenance program and select Login.
  6. Enter the package manager, where most important patches are automatically selected for update. Make sure that the patches are selected correctly, and then select Accept to install the latest updates.
  7. After all updates are installed, select Finish.
