Supported system: IBM® BladeCenter® HC 10 Type 7996 and Type 7997
Follow the instructions in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the Tab key, or Alt + a letter combination to make a selection from a menu.
You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:
- For installation - A licensed copy of Microsoft® Windows® XP x64 Edition.
- Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the list of supported options and part numbers for the blade server.
For more information, see the documentation that comes with the blade server.
You can download device drivers and files from the following Web sites:

To install Microsoft Windows XP x64 Edition, complete the following steps:
- Turn on the blade server and insert the Windows XP Setup CD into the CD drive. When you are prompted with the message Press any key to boot from cd, press any key. Setup copies files from the setup CD. This process takes several minutes.
- When you are prompted to install Windows XP, press Enter.
- Press Enter again to indicate that this is a new installation and not a repair.
- When the license agreement is displayed, read the license agreement and press F8 to agree.

When Windows XP x64 displays all hard disk storage that is available on the blade server, select one of the following options to choose or create a drive partition in which to install Windows XP x64:
- Allow Setup to create a partition: To partition the entire hard disk as one primary partition, highlight non-partitioned space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows XP and press Enter.
- Create a partition: To create a partition, highlight Non-partitioned space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows XP and press C. You are prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the nonpartitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in MB) and press Enter.
- Delete a partition.

When you are prompted to select a file system, select NTFS file system.
Notes:
- Setup formats the selected partition and copies the applicable files to the drive partition. This process takes several minutes.
- The blade server restarts to the graphical portion of Setup where Setup continues with the installation of Windows XP. During this process, Setup automatically installs and configures the devices in the blade server. This process takes several minutes.

Change the regional settings if you are not installing the blade server in the U.S, and then click Next.
Note: To modify the regional settings after installing Windows XP, click Control Panel and then click Regional Options.
- In the Personalize Your Software window, when you are prompted for your name and organization, type your name and organization. The names that you type are used as default blade server names. Applications that you install later use this information for the product registration and document identification. Click Next.
- When you are prompted for the Windows XP x64 Setup CD-Key, type the Windows XP Setup CD-Key in the applicable fields. Click Next. (Setup uses the organization name that was entered previously, as a suggested name for the bladeserver.)
- In the Licensing Modes window, select the applicable licensing mode for your organization. Click Next.

In the Name and Administrator Password window, when you are prompted for an administrator password and blade server name, type the blade server name and password. Click Next. (Setup uses the organization name that was entered previously as a suggested name for the blade server.)
Note: Passwords are case sensitive. Be sure to use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters with at least one number for your password.

In the Time Zone window, set the current time. To change the date, click the button to the right of the date. To change the time, highlight the value that you want to change and enter the new values using the keyboard or the Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys. Click Next.
Note: Windows XP x64 services perform many tasks that are dependent on the accuracy of the time and date settings of the blade server. Be sure to select the correct time zone for the blade server location to avoid problems.
- In the Networking Settings window, select Typical or Custom settings. If you are prompted, type the applicable network information. Click Next to install Windows networking components.

In the Workgroup or Computer Domain window, select one of the following options:
- No, this computer is not on a network, it is a network without a domain.
- Yes, make this computer a member of the following domain.
Type the workgroup or domain name in the applicable field. Click Next.
The remaining operating-system components are installed and configured according to the options that you specified. The display in the left column is the amount of time remaining until the Windows XP installation is completed. This process might take several minutes.
When Windows XP Setup has completed installation, the blade server automatically restarts.
- After Windows XP starts, type the administrator password to log on.
Use the procedures in the following sections to install the device drivers and resolve any unknown device. To open Device Manager, complete the following steps:
- Select Start.
- Right-click Computer.
- Click Manage, click Continue; then, select Device Manager in the left pane.
To install the Intel chipset drivers for the system board, complete the following steps:
- Go to MIGR-4JTS2T.
- Select the link for BladeCenter matrices; then, select BladeCenter HC10 (7996, 7997).

To download the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility, use one of the following procedures:
- Click Open to run the file from its location on the IBM Web site (preferred).
- Transfer the file to a local drive, and double-click the executable (.exe) file to run it.
- In the Welcome window, click Next.
- In the License Agreement window, read the agreement, and click Yes to agree.
- At the Readme information, click Next.
- After the device drivers are installed, click Finish.
- Best practice is to reboot the system after a chipset installation.
To install the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet device driver, complete the following steps:
- Go to MIGR-4JTS2T.
- Select the link for BladeCenter matrices; then, select BladeCenter HC10 (7996, 7997).
- Select the file link to download the Broadcom NetXtreme Ethernet device driver. This takes a few minutes.
- Double-click the device driver package, an executable (.exe) file that will open an extraction program.
- In the Welcome window, click Next.
- In the License Agreement window, read the agreement, and click Accept to agree.
- Type c:\drivers\nic for the folder where the files are to be saved, and click Finish. Later, you will need to point to this location when installing device drivers.
- Click Yes to create the folder.
- When the message The package has been delivered successfully is displayed, click OK.
- Navigate back to the install directory selected and either run Setup.exe or the Launch icon as appropriate to install drivers.
- Refer to the readme file in the installation directory for specific instructions or specialized installations.
- After Windows installs the device drivers, click Finish.
To configure the network, click in sequential order: Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Network Connections, and then select New Connection Wizard to set up the network connection.
To configure network protocols, right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties in the main window.
To join a domain, click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System, click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.
The BladeCenter HC10 Type 7996 and 7997 server requires the use of the ISO IPMI drivers with IBM Director for systems management.
- Go to MIGR-4JTS2T.
- Select the link for BladeCenter matrices; then, select BladeCenter HC10 (7996, 7997).
- Select the file link to download the ISO IPMI device driver and the corresponding map layer that is dependant on 32-bit or 64-bit OS type.
- The correct sequencing for the install is to load the IPMI device driver first, followed by the mapping layer that reflects your installed OS.
- Refer to the readme file accompanying the driver and the mapping layer for specific installation instructions.
The BladeCenter HC10 Type 7996 and 7997 server supports multiple video device types. Complete the following steps to reference installation instructions for drivers on the specific video card installed.
- Go to MIGR-4JTS2T.
- Select the link for BladeCenter matrices; then, select BladeCenter HC10 (7996, 7997).
- Select the file link to download the specific video device driver for the video adapter installed.
- Refer to the readme file accompanying the device driver for specific installation instructions.
The BladeCenter HC10 Type 7996 and 7997 server ships with the audio capability disabled on the UIDC component of the blade server. Refer to the installation documentation that ships with the blade server for instructions on how to enable this function. Once the HD audio is enabled, complete the following steps to install the device driver.
- Go to MIGR-4JTS2T.
- Select the link for BladeCenter matrices; then, select BladeCenter HC10 (7996, 7997).
- Select the file link to download the RealTek HD Audio Device Driver for Microsoft Windows XP x64.
- Follow the readme file with the download to create a device driver diskette or to copy the drive files to c:\drivers\audio.
- Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/901105 and download or run the supported code for Windows XP x64.
- After the patch is installed, reboot the system, the message new device found should display at startup.
- Browse to the audio device drivers downloaded in step 3, then double-click the executable file (Setup.exe) to run it. The installation wizard opens.
- Click Next to install the audio device drivers.
- Click Finish to restart the blade server and complete the installation process.
