Supported systems: IBM System x3105 (Type 4347)

Follow the network operating system (NOS) installation instructions provided in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the tab key, or Alt + a letter combination to make a selection from a menu. The term click is used to denote the use of a mouse to make a selection.

1.0 What you will need

You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:

  • A registered copy of Microsoft Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 4 (or later) integrated.
  • Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven list of supported options and part numbers for the server.
  • If you are using the IBM ServeRAID options, you need the IBM ServeRAID 8.30 (or later) Support CD.
2.0 Where to download device drivers and files

You can download device drivers and files from the following sites:

3.0 Installation instructions for Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

Complete the following steps to install Windows 2000 Server:

  1. Turn on the server, then insert the Windows 2000 Server Setup CD into the CD or DVD drive.
  2. Windows 2000 Server Setup then copies files from the installation CD. This process will take a few minutes. When you are prompted to install Windows 2000 Server, press Enter.
  3. When the licensing agreement is displayed, read the licensing agreement, press Page Down to scroll to the bottom of the screen, then press F8 to select I Agree.
  4. Windows 2000 Server Setup displays all hard disk storage that is available on the server. Use one of the following options to choose or create a drive partition in which to install Windows 2000 Server:
    • Allow setup to create a partition: To partition the entire hard disk as one primary partition, highlight non-partitioned space on the hard disk drive and press Enter.
    • Create a partition: To create a partition, highlight the non-partitioned space on the hard disk drive. Press the C key; you will be prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the nonpartitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in megabytes) and press Enter.
    • Delete a partition.
  5. After you select a drive to partition, you are prompted to choose a file system. Select the NTFS file system. Notes:
    • Setup will format the selected partition and copy the applicable files to the drive partition. This process will take several minutes.
    • The server restarts to the graphical portion of setup where setup will continue with the installation of Windows 2000 Server. During this process, setup will automatically install and configure devices in the server. This process will take several minutes.
  6. The Regional Settings will default to U.S. settings. Make changes if you do not install the server in the U.S. Click Next. Note: To modify the regional settings after installing Windows 2000 Server, click Control Panel, then click Regional Options.
  7. The Personalize Your Software window opens. When you are prompted for your name and organization, type your name in the Name field and type your organization in the Organization field. The names you type are used as default server names. Applications that you install on the server at a later time will use this information for the product registration and document identification. Click Next.
  8. When you are prompted for the Windows 2000 Server CD-Key, type the Windows 2000 Server CD-Key in the applicable fields. Click Next.
  9. In the Licensing Modes window, select the applicable licensing mode for your organization. Click Next.
  10. In the server Name and Administrator Password window, you will be prompted for an administrator password and server name. (Setup uses the organization name, entered previously, as a suggested name for the server.) Type the server name and password. Click Next. Note: Passwords are case sensitive. Be sure to use a combination of upper and lower case letters with at least one number for your password.
  11. In the Time Zone window, set the current time. To change the date, click the button to the right of the date. To change the time, highlight the value you want to change and enter the correct values using the keyboard or the Up and Down Arrow keys. Click Next. Note: Windows 2000 Server services perform many tasks that are dependent on the accuracy of the time and date settings of the server. Be sure to select the correct time zone for the server location to avoid problems.
  12. In the Networking Settings window, select Typical or Custom settings. If you are prompted, type the applicable network information. Click Next to install Windows networking components. Note: If the network card is not functioning (expected for the server), you will not be prompted for network information. You can set up the network from Windows after installation.
  13. In the Workgroup or Computer Domain window, select one of the following options:
    • No, this computer is not on a network, it is a network without a domain.
    • Yes, make this computer a member of the following domain.
    Type the workgroup or domain name in the applicable fields. Click Next.Setup installs and configures the remaining operating system components according to the options you specified. The display in the left column is the amount of time remaining until the Windows 2000 Server installation is completed. This process might take several minutes.
  14. When Windows 2000 Server Setup has completed installation, the server automatically restarts.
  15. After Windows 2000 Server starts, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to log on. When the desktop is displayed, Windows 2000 Server displays the configuration wizard. The wizard assists in the setup of the additional Windows 2000 Server components that you selected during the installation process.
4.0 Post installation instructions: Installing and updating device drivers

The procedures in the following sections will install the device drivers that are necessary to complete the set up of the server. Each of the following sections require you to open Device Manager. To open Device Manager from the desktop, click Start, right-click My Computer, click Manage, then select Device Manager in the left pane to identify hardware that is not functioning (indicated by a yellow exclamation mark usually listed under Other Devices).These instructions assume that you can access the IBM Web site and download the necessary files from the System x Software and device drivers download page.

4.1 Installing Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet device driver

Windows Server 2000 includes a device driver for the Broadcom Network Device on the System x3105 server. To install an updated version, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to the System x Software and device drivers download page, and select System x3105 from the list. Select the link for Broadcom NetXtreme Ethernet Driver; then, click the executable file link for this system.
  2. When the Terms and Conditions window displays, choose one of the following options:
    • If you click I agree and the Use Download Director is checked (the default), the .exe file is saved to a location that you specify. When you are prompted to launch the file, select Yes, and then go to step 3.
    • If you clear the Use Download Director check box, and click I agree, the File Download window opens. Click Save. The .exe file is saved to a local directory. Double-click the .exe file to run it.
  3. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  4. In the License Agreement window, read the agreement and then click Next to continue.
  5. Type c:\drivers\nic for the folder where the files are to be saved. Later you will specify this location when installing the device drivers. Click Finish.
  6. Click Yes to create the folder.
  7. When the message The package has been delivered successfully is displayed, click OK.
  8. Open Device Manager, right-click Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet and click Update Driver.
  9. When the Hardware Update Wizard window prompts you to check the Internet for a device driver, click No, not at this time, and click Next.
  10. Select Install from a specific location and click Next.
  11. When prompted for the file location, clear the Search for removable media check box, click the Include this location in the search check box, and type c:\drivers\nic.
  12. When the driver installation has completed, click Finish.
  13. At the prompt to restart the server, select No.

To configure the network, click in sequential order: Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections and select New Connection Wizard, to set up the network connection.To configure network protocols, right-click Local Area Connection in the Network Connections window, then click Properties.To join a domain, click Start -> Control Panel -> System, click the Computer Name tab; then, click Change.

4.2 Installing a Nforce board device driver

To install the IBM system board device driver, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to the System x Software and device drivers download page, and select System x3105 from the list. Locate and click the link for Nforce Chipset Software Installation Utility (INF); then, select the applicable file and use one of the following procedures:
    • Click Open to run the file from its location on the IBM Web site (preferred).
    • Transfer the file to a local drive, and then double-click the executable (.exe) file to run it.
  2. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  3. In the License Agreement window, read the license agreement and click Yes to agree.
  4. At the Readme information, click Next.
  5. After the device drivers are installed, click Finish (restart the server).
4.3 Installing an AMD Power Now device driver

To install the AMD Power Now device driver, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to the System x Software and device drivers download page, and select System x3105 from the list. Locate and click the link for AMD Power Now Installation Utility, then select the applicable file and use one of the following procedures:
    • Click Open to run the file from its location on the IBM Web site (preferred).
    • Transfer the file to a local drive, and then double-click the executable (.exe) file to run it (restart the server).
4.4 Installing an IBM Automatec Server Restart (ASR) device driver

To install the IBM system board device drivers, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to the System x Software and device drivers download page, and select System x3105 from the list. Locate and click the link for ASR Utility; then, select the applicable file and use one of the following procedures:
    • Click Open to run the file from its location on the IBM Web site (preferred).
    • Transfer the file to a local drive and save it to a location on your hard drive.
  2. Double-click the "Add hardware" wizard in the Control Panel.
  3. At the "Welcome to the Add Hardware Wizard", click Next.
  4. Select Yes, I have already connected the hardware, and then click Next.
  5. Select Add a new hardware device from the list; then, click Next.
  6. Select Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced); then, click Next.
  7. Select Show All Devices from the list; then, click Next.
  8. Click Have Disk.
  9. At "Copy manufacturer's files from", point to the directory for this hardware; then, click Next.
  10. At "The wizard is ready to install your hardware"; click Next. Make sure the SYS file is copied under the appropriate subdirectory (i386, amd64).
  11. At "Completing the Add Hardware Wizard", click Finish.
