Follow the network operating system (NOS) installation instructions provided in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the tab key, or Alt + a letter combination to make a selection from a menu. The term click is used to denote the use of a mouse to make a selection.


1.0 What you will need
  • A registered copy of Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 integrated.
  • Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven(R) list of supported options and part numbers for the server.
  • Supported adapters. Go to http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven list of supported options and part numbers for the server.
  • If you are using an IBM ServeRAID adapter, you need the IBM ServeRAID Support CD version 7.0 or later.
  • If you are using the internal SCSI controller, you will need a diskette containing the Adaptec drivers.
  • A utility to unzip a zip file.

3.0 Installation instructions for Microsoft Windows 2000

Notes:

  • Take precautions when moving an IBM server. See the Installation Guide that comes with the server for more information.
  • To make sure that the internal components are cooled properly, do not remove the cover while operating an IBM server.
  • Components can be installed after you complete the Windows 2000 operating system installation process.

Complete the following steps to install Microsoft Windows 2000:

  1. Turn on the server. Insert the Windows 2000 Setup CD into the CD drive.

    Note: You might be prompted with the message "Press any key to boot from cd". Press any key to start the server from the Windows 2000 Setup CD.

  2. Immediately after the Windows Setup is displayed, the message "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration" is displayed. If you are using the integrated SCSI controller, press F6 to install a third party SCSI device driver. If you are not using the integrated SCSI controller, proceed to step 7.
  3. Windows 2000 Setup opens a window to manually specify a controller. Select S to specify additional devices.
  4. When prompted, insert the manufacturer supplied hardware support diskette.
    1. If the server has an integrated Adaptec SCSI controller, insert the diskette that contains the Adaptec Ultra320 SCSI device driver. For information about downloading the Adaptec Ultra320 device driver from the IBM Web site, go to Software and device drivers - IBM eServer xSeries 206, 306, then navigate to the required device driver.
    2. After inserting the correct diskette, press Enter.
  5. Select Adaptec Ultra320 SCSI Cards (Windows 2000) from the list, then press Enter.
  6. After Setup finishes copying files, you have the option to specify additional SCSI adapters, CD drives, or special disk controllers for use with Windows 2000. If there are no more additional mass storage devices to specify, press Enter.
  7. The Windows 2000 setup window opens after a short delay. The Windows 2000 setup will take a few minutes to load. When you are prompted to install Windows 2000, press Enter.
  8. In the licensing agreement window, press Page Down to scroll to the bottom of the window, and press F8 to select I Agree.
  9. In the Setup window, all hard disk storage that is available on the server is displayed. Select one of the following options to choose or create a drive partition in which to install Windows 2000:
    • Allow setup to create a partition - To partition the entire hard disk as one primary partition, select non-partitioned space on the hard disk and press Enter.
    • Create a Partition - To create a partition, highlight the non-partitioned space on the hard disk. Press the C key; you will be prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the nonpartitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in megabytes) and press Enter.
    • Delete a Partition.

    When you are prompted to choose a file system, select NTFS file system

    Notes:

    • Setup will format the selected partition and copy the applicable files to the drive partition. This process will take several minutes.
    • The server restarts to the graphical portion of setup where setup will continue with the installation of Windows 2000. During this process, setup will automatically install and configure devices in the server. This process will take several minutes.
  10. The Regional Settings will default to U.S. settings. If you do not install the server in the U.S., make the necessary changes. Then click Next to continue.

    Note: To modify the regional settings after installing Windows 2000, click Control Panel, then click Regional Options.

  11. The Personalize Your Software window opens. Type your name and organization in the applicable fields. The names you type are used as default server names. Applications that you install on the server at a later time will use this information for product registration and document identification. Click Next to continue.
  12. When you are prompted, type the Windows 2000 Setup CD-Key in the applicable fields. Click Next to continue.
  13. In the Licensing Modes window, select the appropriate licensing mode for your organization. Click Next to continue.
  14. In the server Name and Administrator Password window, when you are prompted, (Setup uses the organization name that you typed previously as a suggested name for the server) type the server name and password in the applicable fields. Click Next to continue.

    Note: Passwords are case sensitive. Be sure to use a combination of upper and lower case letters with at least one number for your password.

  15. In the Time Zone window, set the current time and date for Windows 2000. To change the time, highlight the value you want to change and enter the correct values using the keyboard or the up and down arrow keys. To change the date, click the button to the right of the date. Click Next to continue.

    Note: Windows 2000 services perform many tasks that are dependent on the accuracy of the time and date settings of the server. Make sure to select the correct time zone for the server location to avoid problems.

  16. In the Networking Settings window, select either typical or custom settings. If custom settings is selected, you will be prompted to type the appropriate network information. Click Next to install Windows networking components.

    Note: If the network card is not functioning (expected for the xSeries 306 server), you will not be prompted for network information. You can set up the network from Windows 2000 after installation.

  17. In the Workgroup or Computer Domain window, selected one of the following options:
    • No, this computer is not on a network, it is a network without a domain.
    • Yes, make this computer a member of the following domain box.

    Type the workgroup or domain name in the appropriate fields. Click Next to continue.

    Setup installs and configures the remaining operating system components according to the options you specified. The display in the left column is the amount of time remaining until the Windows 2000 installation is completed. This process might take several minutes.

  18. After the installation is completed, remove the Windows 2000 Setup CD from the CD drive and click Finish. Windows 2000 restarts and runs the newly installed version of Windows 2000.
  19. After the Windows 2000 program starts, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to log on. When the desktop is displayed, Windows 2000 configures the server wizard. The server wizard assists in the set up of the additional Windows 2000 components that you selected during the installation process.

4.0 Post installation instructions: installing and updating device drivers

The procedures in the following sections will load the device drivers necessary to finish setting up the server. Each of the following sections requires that Device Manager is open. To open the Device Manager, on the desktop, click Start, right-click My Computer, click Manage, then select Device Manager in the left pane to identify hardware that is not functioning (indicated by a yellow exclamation mark usually listed under "Other Devices").

These instructions assume you are able to access the IBM Web site and download the necessary files from IBM device driver download site: Software and device drivers - IBM eServer xSeries 206, 306.


4.1 Installing the network controller device drivers

To install the network controller device drivers, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to IBM device driver download site: Software and device drivers - IBM eServer xSeries 206, 306. Download the IBM Intel(R)-based Gigabit and 10/100 Ethernet adapter device drivers for Windows 2000 and transfer this file to a local drive. To run the downloaded executable (.exe) file, double-click the .exe file, which will extract the files onto the local hard disk
  2. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  3. In the License Agreement window, click Next to agree to the License Agreement.
  4. Type c:\drivers\nic for the folder where the files are to be saved. Later, you will need to point to this location when installing the device drivers. Click Finish.
  5. Click Yes to create the folder.
  6. When the message "The package has been delivered successfully" is displayed, click OK.
  7. On the desktop, open Device Manager, right-click the Ethernet Controller, click Properties, then click Reinstall Driver.
  8. In the Welcome to the Upgrade Device Driver wizard window, click Next.
  9. In the Install Hardware Device Drivers window, select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended), then click Next.
  10. In the Locate Driver Files window, clear the first two check boxes, then select Specify a Location and click Next. When prompted for the file location, click Browse, then navigate to c:\drivers\nic\PRO\1000\WS03XP32. Click Open, then click OK to close the browse window and begin searching for the new device drivers.
  11. When the message "Windows found a driver that is a closer match... " is displayed, click Next to install the device driver. After Windows installs the device drivers, click Finish.

To configure the network, click in sequential order: Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network and Dial-up Connections. To join a domain, click Network Identification. To configure network protocols, right-click Local Area Connection, then click Properties in the main window.


4.2 Installing the video device drivers

To install the video device drivers, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to Software and device drivers - IBM IntelliStation Z Pro (Type 6223). Select the ATI Radeon 7000 device drivers, then either:
    • Click Open to run the file from its location on the IBM Web site (preferred).
    • Transfer the file to a local drive, then double-click the .exe file to run it.
  2. Run the downloaded executable file, then in the Welcome window, click Next.
  3. In the License Agreement window, click I accept the terms in the license agreement, then click Next.
  4. Accept the default location where the files are to be saved, then click Next.
  5. The setup program installs the video device drivers. Click Finish.
  6. Continue with Section 4.3 Installing IBM system board device drivers.

4.3 Installing IBM system board device drivers

To install the IBM system board device drivers, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to Software and device drivers - IBM eServer xSeries 206, 306. Select the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility, then either:
    • Click Open to run the file from its location on the IBM Web site (preferred).
    • Transfer the file to a local drive, then double-click the .exe file to run the executable file.
  2. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  3. In the License Agreement window, select Yes to agree to the License Agreement.
  4. Click Next at the Readme Information.
  5. After the device drivers are loaded, click Finish (restarts the server).

4.4 Resolving unknown devices

To resolve unknown devices, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to Software and device drivers - IBM eServer xSeries 206, 306. Download the Alert Standard Format Update (zip) file to a local drive. Unzip the files to c:\drivers\asf.
  2. In the Device Manager, select and right-click the Unknown Device, then click Reinstall driver.
  3. In the Welcome to the Upgrade Device Driver wizard window, click Next.
  4. In the Install Hardware Device Drivers window, select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended), then click Next.
  5. In the Locate Driver Files window, clear the first two check boxes, then select Specify a Location and click Next. When prompted for the file location, click Browse, then navigate to: c:\drivers\asf. Click Open, then click OK to close the browse window and begin searching for the new device drivers.
  6. When the message "Windows found a driver that is a closer match... " is displayed, click Next to install the device driver. After Windows installs the device drivers, click Finish.
  7. Close the Properties window.

4.5 Installing Windows Service Pack 4 (or later)

The Universal Serial Bus (USB) controller requires that you install Windows Service Pack 4 (or later). To download the most recent Service Pack for Windows 2000, go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/. Follow the installation instructions to install the Service Pack.

Note: Before you install the Windows Service Pack, if you are using ServeRAID, make sure that the device driver for the ServeRAID device is digitally signed. A non-digitally signed device driver will be overwritten by the installation of a Windows 2000 service pack; ServeRAID will not function if this happens. For information about downloading the IBM ServeRAID Device Drivers diskette, see section 1.0 What you will need.

After installing the Windows Service Pack, open Device Manager, right-click Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller (listed under System Devices with a small yellow exclamation mark), click Reinstall Driver, and complete the following steps:

  1. In the Welcome to the Upgrade Device Driver wizard window, click Next.
  2. In the Install Hardware Device Drivers window, select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended), then click Next.
  3. In the Locate Driver Files window, clear all of the check boxes, then click Next.
  4. When the message "Windows found a driver that is a closer match..." is displayed, click Next to install the device driver. After Windows installs the device drivers, click Finish.

4.6 Installing the SCSI controllers device drivers

Note: You can skip this section if you pressed F6 during the installation, and loaded the device drivers from a diskette.

To make sure that the two SCSI controllers are correctly installed and appear under SCSI and RAID Controllers, open Device Manager, select and right-click Other Devices. If there are two SCSI Controller entries, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to Software and device drivers - IBM eServer xSeries 206, 306 and select the Adaptec Ultra320 SCSI driver for Windows 2000, then either:
    • Click Open to run the file from its location on the IBM Web site (preferred).
    • Transfer the file to a local drive, then double-click the .exe file to run the executable file.
  2. In the License Agreement window, select Yes to agree to the License Agreement.
  3. When prompted for the installation folder, type c:\drivers\scsi. Click Next. The folder will be created and the files copied. Click Finish at the final window.
  4. In Device Manager, right-click a SCSI Controller device, then select Properties, and click Reinstall Driver.
  5. In the Welcome to the Upgrade Device Driver wizard window, click Next.
  6. In the Install Hardware Device Drivers window, select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended), then click Next.
  7. In the Locate Driver Files window, clear the first two check boxes, then select Specify a Location and click Next. When prompted for the file location, click Browse, then navigate to c:\drivers\scsi\win32bit. Click Open, then click OK to close the browse window and begin searching for the new device drivers.
  8. When the message "Windows found a driver that is a closer match..." is displayed, click Next to install the device driver. After Windows installs the device drivers, click Finish.
  9. Close the Properties window.
  10. In Device Manager, select and right-click the remaining SCSI Controller, then select Properties, and click Reinstall Driver.
  11. In the Welcome to the Upgrade Device Driver wizard window, click Next.
  12. In the Install Hardware Device Drivers window, select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended), then click Next.
  13. In the Locate Driver Files window, clear all of the check boxes, then click Next.
  14. When the message "Windows found a driver that is a closer match..." is displayed, click Next to install the device driver. After Windows installs the device drivers, click Finish.

4.7 Installing the multimedia audio controller device driver

To download the device driver for the audio controller, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to Software and device drivers - IBM eServer xSeries 206, 306to download the device driver for the audio controller. Unzip the files to c:\drivers\audio. Double-click setup.exe to run the file.
  2. In the Welcome window, click Next. The audio device drivers are installed.
  3. To complete the installation and restart the server, click Finish.
