This document provides instructions for a basic installation and a remote installation of Microsoft Windows 2000 Server. Choosing to install additional components may cause some windows and messages to differ from those in this document. Be sure to follow these instructions precisely to ensure that you install the operating system correctly. Additional components may be installed after the initial installation process has been completed.

4.0 Installing Microsoft Windows Remote Installation Server (RIS)

You can use Remote Installation Services (RIS) to install Microsoft Windows 2000 Server remotely. By installing Microsoft Windows 2000 Server remotely, you can simplify the deployment of the operating system throughout your enterprise network. RIS allows multiple blades to install simultaneously off a CD image. RIS is included with Microsoft Windows 2000 Server. For more information and instruction on installing Microsoft Windows 2000 Server RIS, visit Microsoft's home page at http://www.microsoft.com and search on Remote Installation Services (RIS).

NOTE: Service Pack 4 or later must be installed if Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server is installed as the operating system for the RIS server.

4.1 Configuring the RIS image on the RIS server

When performing RIS installation of Microsoft Windows 2000 Server on the 8832 blade server, the Broadcom OEM network adapter driver must be modified and added to the RIS Windows 2000 image. This prevents the user from receiving the following error message during Windows Setup:

The operating system image you selected does not contain the necessary drivers for your network adapter. Try selecting a different operating system image. If the problem persists, contact your administrator.

Complete the following steps to perform a remote installation of Microsoft Windows 2000 Server:

  1. Install and configure Microsoft Windows 2000 Server RIS. For information and instruction visit Microsoft's web site at http://www.microsoft.com and use their search function.
  2. On the RIS server, copy the OEM-supplied .inf and .sys file for the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet device to the RemoteInstall\Setup\(Language)\Images\(Directory Name)\i386 folder
  3. At the same level as the i386 folder on the RIS image, create a $oem$ folder with the following structure:

    \$OEM$\$1\Drivers\Nic

  4. Copy the OEM-supplied drivers (both .INF and .sys) to this folder.
  5. Make the following changes to the .sif file to be used for this image installation:

    [Unattended]
    OemPreinstall = yes

    OemPnpDriversPath = \Drivers\Nic

NOTE: The default location of the .sif file is RemoteInstall\Setup\(language)\Images\(Directory name)\I386\Templates\Ristndrd.sif. To make the installation more automated, other parameters may be added in the .sif file under [Unattended].

  6. Save and exit the file.
  7. Stop and start the BINL service on the RIS server. This can be done using the command prompt by typing the following lines, pressing Enter after each line:

    net stop binlsvc
    net start binlsvc

NOTE: You must start and stop the BINL service each time a change is made to the .inf network related files in the RIS image. BINL needs to read all the new network interface card-related .inf files and create .pnf files in the image.

4.2 Installing Microsoft Windows 2000 Server on clients using RIS

  1. Boot the blade server into the "Configuration/Setup Utility" program (system BIOS).
  2. In the blade server Configuration/Setup Utility program, set the network adapter to be the primary boot device, and restart the server.
  3. When prompted, press F12. This prompt will come up after the blade server has established a connection with the RIS server.

NOTE: It is important that the network cable uses port A of the network adapter. When connecting to a Remote Installation Server (RIS) from port B of a multi-port network adapter, Windows Setup may appear to stop responding at the "Setup is starting Windows 2000 Server" screen.

  4. When the "Welcome" window opens, press Enter.
  5. Type the user name, password, and domain of the blade server into the applicable fields and press Enter. The blade server account and a global unique ID for the blade server are displayed. Press Enter.
  6. Continue with step 8 in 5.0 Basic CD-ROM installation instructions.

5.0 Installing Microsoft Windows 2000 Server using a CD

  1. Turn on the server. Insert the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server (32-Bit) Setup CD into the CD-ROM drive, then restart the server.

NOTE: When the server restarts, you might be prompted with the message "Press any key to boot from cd". Press any key to boot the server from the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Setup CD.

  4. You will be prompted for the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Setup CD-Key. Type the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Setup CD-Key in the appropriate fields. Click Next to continue.
  5. In the "Licensing Modes" window, select the appropriate licensing mode for your organization. Click Next to continue.
  6. At the server "Name and Administrator Password" window, you will be prompted for an administrator password and computer name. (Notice that Setup uses the organization name (entered earlier) as a suggested name for the computer.) Type your computer name and password. Click Next to continue.

NOTE: Passwords are case sensitive. Be sure to use a combination of upper and lower case letters with at least one number for your password.

  7. In the "Time Zone" window, set the current time for Windows 2000 Server. To change the date, click the button to the right of the date. To change the time, highlight the value you want to change and enter the correct values by using the keyboard, or by using the Up and Down arrow keys. Click Next to continue.

NOTE: Windows 2000 Server services perform many tasks that are dependent on the successful completion of the computer's time and date settings. Be sure to select the correct time zone for the server location to avoid subsequent problems.

  8. In the Networking Settings window, select typical or custom settings. If you are prompted, type the appropriate network information. Click Next to install "Windows networking components".
  9. In the "Workgroup" or "Computer Domain" window, select one of the following options:
  • No, this computer is not on a network, it is a network without a domain. Type a workgroup name in the following box.
  • Yes, make this computer a member of the following domain box.

Type the workgroup or domain name in the appropriate fields. Click Next to continue.

Setup will now install and configure the remaining operating system components according to the options you specified. Display in the left hand column is the amount of time left until the completion of Microsoft Windows 2000 Server installation. This process might take several minutes.
  1. Remove the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Setup CD from the CD-ROM drive and click Finish. Windows Server 2000 restarts and runs the newly installed version of Microsoft Windows 2000 Server.
  2. The Microsoft Windows 2000 Server program starts, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to logon. When the desktop is displayed, you will see "Windows 2000 Server configure your server" wizard. The server wizard will assist in the set up of any additional Windows 2000 Server components that you selected during the installation process.
