If you have prior experience with small computer system interface (SCSI) hardware and the installation process, continue with 3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users. If not, continue with 4.0 Detailed installation instructions.

3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users

  1. If you have installed the PC ServeRAID III Adapter and plan to use it as the startup device, see 4.0 Detailed installation instructions. If you plan to use an external direct access storage device (DASD) enclosure, see the documentation provided with the external enclosure for proper set up.
  2. Insert the CD-ROM labeled "NetWare 6.0 Operating System"and start up (boot) the system to run the installation program.

4.0 Detailed installation instructions

To install NetWare, at least one network adapter device must be installed and a driver loaded for the device during the installation. Additional network adapters can be installed and configured during or after the installation.

NOTE: For IDE models, ensure that your hard drive is the primary master.

4.1 Setting up the hardware for NetWare Version 6.0 installation

  1. Unplug the server from the power source and remove the cover.
  2. If problems occur when attempting to install multiple adapters and devices, for the initial installation, install all the microprocessors that you plan to use. Then, remove all the adapters and devices that are not required to get the base operating system installed.

For example, if you are installing multiple network adapters, install only one now. If you are using a tape drive or external SCSI devices, disconnect them temporarily. After the operating system is starting without errors, reinstall the removed adapters and devices one at a time. This procedure simplifies the installation process.

NOTE: If you plan to use an external direct access storage device (DASD) enclosure, the following instructions do not apply. See the documentation provided with the external enclosure for the correct setup and then continue with section 4.2 Setting up the system BIOS .

  3. Install the hard disk drives that you require into the drive bays.
  4. Reinstall the cover.
  5. Plug the server back into the power source.

4.2 Setting up the system BIOS

Complete the following steps to set up the system BIOS:

  1. Start the server.
  2. When the IBM logo appears, press F1 to enter the Configuration/Setup Utility.
  3. Verify that your BIOS Revision Level is at the latest level of BIOS on the IBM Web or FTP site.
  4. If you need to update the BIOS, complete the following steps:
    1. From the IBM Support Web site, click Downloadable files in the left pane of the window.
    2. From the Select Your Product menu, select the product family.
    3. From the Downloadable Files by Category menu, select BIOS (System).
    4. Build the diskette image; double-click to start the executable (.exe) file (in DOS or OS/2). In the last window of the License Agreement, press the Y key. Properly label the diskette using the part number to associate the correct name for the flash diskette.
    5. To update the BIOS, complete the steps in the corresponding readme.txt file.
  5. If you are using an IDE interface, proceed to section 4.5 Installing Novell NetWare version 6.0. If you are using the IBM ServeRAID adapter, proceed to section 4.4 Configuring arrays using the IBM ServeRAID adapter. Otherwise, continu with section 4.3 Configuring hard disk drives using the integrated SCSI controller.

  13. Click No when the Ready Drives confirmation window appears.
  14. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete at the Exit window and remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive when the system restarts

NOTE: On some servers it might be necessary to disable the integrated Adaptec controller startup (boot) capability. (You can still access devices attached to it if the proper device drivers are installed.)

  15. Complete the following steps if you have problems with the ServeRAID configuration:
    a. Press Ctrl+A when prompted after the system restarts.
    b. If you have a two-channel system, select the channel you want to configure.

4.6 Post installation notes

  1. After NetWare is installed, you might experience problems getting clients to find the server and tree in IP environments. Complete the steps below to troubleshoot problems or go to the Novell Web site and see (TID #10053923):
    1. Manually specify the tree name, context, and specify the IP address in the server field (instead of the server name).
    2. Modify the HOSTS file on the client to add the IP address of the server followed by the server name if you do not want the user to type in the server IP address.
    3. Install and configure slpda.nlm on the NetWare server.
  2. Complete the following steps to add User Licenses:
    1. When the server installation is complete, log into the server from a Microsoft Windows client authenticated to NDS as the admin user.
