1.0 Before installing Windows 2000

This document provides xSeries 345 system users with the installation instructions for a basic Windows 2000 Server installation process. Windows 2000 Server presents many different installation options. You might install or uninstall options that will facilitate tuning the xSeries 345 server to meet your individual needs. Doing this might result in windows and messages that will differ from those in this document. Be sure to follow these instructions for installing Windows 2000 precisely to ensure that you install Windows 2000 correctly. Windows 2000 allows you to install components after you have completed the installation process.

1.1 ServeRAID

Determine if the system is equipped with an IBM ServeRAID card. If you have equipped your xSeries 345 with a ServeRAID card, please review section 4.0 Appendix before you proceed with the installation instructions in section 2.0 Installation instructions.

NOTE: If you have a system that is equipped with a ServeRAID card, you must perform additional procedures that are described in section 4.0 Appendix.

2.0 Installation instructions

  1. Insert the Windows 2000 Setup CD into the CD-ROM drive and restart the system. The system will start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD. A few seconds after the Windows Setup screen appears, the message "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration" appears.
  2. Press F6 to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver. Windows 2000 Setup displays a window to manually specify a controller.
  3. Select S to specify additional devices.Windows Setup will prompt you to insert the manufacturer's supplied hardware support disk.
  4. Insert the IBM ServeRAID Device Driver disk if installing an IBM ServeRAID card or insert the diskette that contains the LSI SCSI device driver if installing the onboard LSI SCSI controller. After inserting the correct disk, press Enter. For information on downloading either the IBM ServeRAID device driver or the LSI Logic PCI SCS/FC driver, proceed to section 4.6 Where to download device drivers and files.
  5. Select the appropriate IBM ServeRAID controller driver if installing a ServeRAID device. If installing the onboard LSI SCSI device, select the LSI Logic PCI SCSI/FC MPI Miniport driver. After making a selection, press Enter.
  6. After Setup finishes copying files that support the IBM ServeRAID controller or the LSI Logic PCI SCSI/FC controller, you have the option to specify additional SCSI adapters, CD-ROM drives, or special disk controllers for use with Windows 2000. If there are no more additional mass storage devices to specify, press Enter. The Windows 2000 setup window appears after a short delay. The Windows 2000 setup will take a few minutes to load. The "Welcome to Setup" message appears at the top right corner of the window.
  7. Press Enter to install the Windows 2000 Server. The Windows 2000 licensing agreement appears.
  8. Read the licensing agreement and press the Page Down key to scroll to the bottom of the window.
  9. Then select I Agree by pressing F8. The Windows 2000 Setup window will show all hard disk storage available on the system. You might select or create a partition to install Windows 2000 Server.
  10. Select one of the following three options:
    • Allow setup to create a partition: Press Enter when you highlight non-partitioned space on your hard drive. Setup will partition the entire disk as one primary partition.

    • Delete a partition: Use this option only if there are partitions that need to be permanently deleted to allow enough room to create new partitions.
  11. After you select a drive to partition, setup will prompt you to select a file system. Select the NTFS file system (unless you dual start with an operating system that does not support NTFS.) The system restarts to the graphical portion of setup (the Windows 2000 setup wizard appears). Windows setup will create a Welcome window when Windows 2000 is fully loaded.

NOTE: You might modify the regional settings, after you have installed Windows 2000, by using the menu option Regional Options in the Control Panel.

  14. Setup will display the Personalize Your Software window that will prompt you for your name and organization name. In the Name field, type your name, and in the Organizations field, type the organization's name. The names selected will be used as default computer names. Applications that you install on the system later will use this information for the product registration and document identification. Click Next to continue.
  15. Setup will prompt you for the Windows 2000 Setup CD-Key. Type the Windows 2000 Setup CD-Key in the appropriate fields. Click Next to continue.
