Steps

 
Preparing for the upgrade from an existing Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
1.Backup files before beginning this upgrade.
2.Download and install the latest flash BIOS available for your system. To obtain the current BIOS level for your system, visit the IBM Personal Computing Support site. Instructions for downloading and installing the flash BIOS are included in the README text file.
3.Restore the original Windows NT 4.0 preload using the IBM Product Recovery CD. Restoring the original Windows NT 4.0 preload is recommended for the best results.
NOTE : Not all models ship with a Product Recovery CD or were preloaded with Windows NT 4.0.
 
 
Upgrading

1. Insert the Windows 2000 CD into the CD-ROM Drive.
2. If the auto run feature is enabled, click YES to respond to the prompt "This CD-ROM contains a newer version of Windows than the one you are presently using. Would you like to upgrade to Windows 2000?" Then skip step 3.
3. If the auto run feature is disabled, click START -> RUN . Type X:\i386\winnt32 in the Open: box (X represents the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive), and then click OK to start the Windows 2000 installation.
4. Click Upgrade to Windows 2000 at the "Welcome to Windows 2000 Setup Wizard" window.
5. Click NEXT to continue the Windows 2000 setup wizard.
6. Read the Licensing Agreement for Windows 2000. If you accept the terms that are displayed, click I accept the Agreement and then click NEXT to continue.
7. Type in the Windows 2000 Product Key, and click NEXT to continue.
8. Read the information displayed on the "Upgrading to the Windows 2000 NTFS File System" window.
9. Click No, do not upgrade my drive , then click NEXT . (The file system can be converted after the upgrade installation has finished). An upgrade report is generated that provides a summary of known compatibility issues at the time that the Windows 2000 CD was created. This step may take some time, depending upon how many applications are installed on the target drive. Once the system report is generated, the report will be displayed.
10. Click NEXT to continue. Setup will now copy files from the Windows 2000 CD to the boot partition. This step may also take some time. After files are copied to the hard drive, Windows 2000 will restart your computer automatically. The Windows 2000 GUI is displayed and the upgrade continues for several minutes before Windows 2000 restarts your computer automatically.
11. Type the Administrators Password when prompted, and select OK to enter the Windows 2000 Professional Desktop.
