Steps


Preparing for the upgrade from an existing Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
1.Backup your files before beginning this upgrade.
2.Download and install the latest flash BIOS available for your system. The current BIOS level is available by visiting the IBM Personal Computing Support site.
3. Read the accompanying text file for instructions. For the best results, it is recommended that the original Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 preload be restored using the IBM Product Recovery CD.
NOTE: Not all models ship with a Product Recovery CD or were preloaded with Windows NT 4.0.

Upgrading
1.Insert the Windows 2000 CD into the CD-Rom Drive.
2.If the auto run feature is enabled, click YES to the prompt "This CD-ROM contains a newer version of Windows than the one you are presently using. Would you like to upgrade to Windows 2000?", and then skip step three.
3.If the auto run feature is disabled, click START -> RUN. Type X:\i386\winnt32 in the Open: box (X represents the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.) and then click OK , to start the windows 2000 installation.
4.Click Upgrade to Windows 2000 at the "Welcome to Windows 2000 Setup Wizard" window.
5.Click NEXT to continue the Windows 2000 setup wizard.
6.Read the Licensing Agreement for Windows 2000. If you accept the terms that are displayed, click I accept the Agreement and then click NEXT to continue.
7.Type the Windows 2000 Product Key, and click NEXT to continue.
8.Read all the information displayed on the "Upgrading to the Windows 2000 NTFS File System" window.
9.Click No, do not upgrade my drive , then click NEXT . (The file system can be converted after the upgrade install has finished).
10.An upgrade report is generated that provides a summary of known compatibility issues at the time that the Windows 2000 CD was created. This step will take some time, depending upon how many applications are installed on the target drive. Once the system report is generated, it will be displayed. Click NEXT to continue. Setup will now copy files from the Windows 2000 CD to the boot partition. This step will also take some time. After files are copied to the hard drive, Windows 2000 will restart your computer automatically.
The Windows 2000 GUI is displayed and continues with the upgrade. This portion will also take several minutes to complete. Windows 2000 will restart your computer automatically.
11. Type the Administrators Password when prompted and select OK to enter the Windows 2000 Professional Desktop.
