This document details the fault tolerant setup of the IBM Gigabit Ethernet adapter under Microsoft Windows 2000. While it is possible to install the IBM Gigabit Ethernet Network Interface Cards (NICs) as part of the regular Operating System install, this document assumes that the Operating System is already installed and up and running. This was done to keep the procedure as simple as possible.

The install will require the IBM Gigabit Ethernet adapter driver. The image contains the NIC driver and the AltVLAN protocol for pairing under Microsoft Windows 2000. The AltVLAN protocol is used to set up the actual teaming and load balancing.

Setting up the fault tolerant pair
  1. With the server powered off, install the NICs in the system. Try to install the adapters in the same type of slot, i.e.- both 64-bit, both hot swap, etc. Power up the server and boot up to the Operating System. Windows 2000 will detect the NICs on the first boot after install. Windows will offer to search for the drivers of the adapters. Unfortunately, Windows 2000 does not include a driver for the adapter. Place the driver diskette in the floppy drive and click Next.
  2. Windows 2000 will next prompt you for the location of the drivers for the IBM Gigabit Ethernet adapter. Place the diskette in the diskette drive. Clear all the check boxes except for the one next to Floppy disk drives and click Next. You will then be prompted that Windows 2000 has found a driver for the hardware device, and that the Found New Hardware Wizard has completed. It will also list the hardware that was set up. Click Finish to continue.
  3. Next, right-click My Network Places and select properties. Right-click one of the IBM Gigabit Ethernet adapters and select properties.

  4. To setup the adapter pairing, the AltVLAN protocol must be installed. To do this, click the install button. The next window prompts you for the type of network component to install. Select Protocol and click the Add button.

  5. The Next window shows the preload protocols available for Microsoft Windows 2000. Put the IBM Gigabit Ethernet adapter driver in the drive and click Have Disk...

  6. Next, the user is prompted for the path to the protocol install files. Select the drive where the IBM Gigabit Ethernet adapter driver is located. Click the OK button to continue.

  7. After scanning the drive, Microsoft Windows 2000 displays the protocols available on the driver diskette. Select AltVLAN Protocol and click OK. The files are then loaded.

  8. After the files are copied, the Local Area Connection properties are displayed and the AltVLAN protocol is now bound to the adapter.

  9. Next, open the AltVLAN protocol properties. A driver properties dialog box is displayed. The NIC status and configuration are displayed. This page displays the link speed and status, as well as the MAC address. The settings displayed below are the defaults. Click the Team Configuration tab to create an adapter pair. A series of Digital Signature Not Found dialog boxes will appear. Click the Yes button to continue.

  10. After the software installs, the Team Configuration tab is displayed. To create a team, click the Create a Team button.

  11. An IBM Netfinity Team is created. Now, highlight each NIC and click the << Add NIC button to add each NIC to the team.

  12. Now you have created a fault-tolerant pair of IBM Gigabit Ethernet adapters. The last tab of the Driver Properties dialog box is Tech Support. It displays the software revisions and dates. To run diagnostics on the adapter, click the Diagnostics button. Remember, the loopback test requires the loopback connector to work.

  13. Now, when the My Network Places properties are opened, the IBM Netfinity Team is displayed as a network connection. Right-click this new connection to set the properties for the pair.

  14. Here is where the properties for the pair are assigned.
    Note: the AltVLAN protocol is not bound to the logical pair. It is only bound to PHYSICAL adapters.

  15. Setup is complete. Click the OK button to close the Local Area Connection 4 Properties window.
Testing the fault tolerant pair
  1. To test the fault tolerant pair, open up the Microsoft Windows 2000 system event viewer, and then unplug the cable going to the Primary adapter. You may have to refresh event viewer to see the error. The first error is "Event ID 20 - adapter link down".

  2. The next message is "Event ID 1 - Active Adapter in a team changed". The secondary adapter has taken over.

  3. Plug the cable back into the primary NIC. This will result in the message, "Event ID 25 - media connect".

  4. You will then get the message "Event ID 24". The adapter status lists the speed and duplexing information for the NIC.

  5. And finally, you will get the message "Event ID 1 - Active adapter in team changed". The primary adapter has now taken control of the pair.

  6. Testing is complete. Click the OK button to close the Event Properties window.
