General information
The IBM TR4 4/8GB Tape Drives are the high-end products of the Mini-QIC tape family. They are high-performance, high-capacity tape backup products. The IBM TR4 INTERNAL SCSI TAPE DRIVE (P/N 06H9716, FC 2358) and the IBM TR4 EXTERNAL SCSI TAPE DRIVE (MT/MN 3502-900), provide cost-effective tape backup solutions for mid-range to high-end desktop and server computer systems.

These drives feature 4.0GB native capacity and a backup rate of up to 30 MB/min. With the use of software-controlled data compression, the drive capacity can be increased to 8.0GB and the backup rate can be raised to as high as 60 MB/min.

The TR4 internal drives can be installed in any available 3.5-inch hori- zontal or vertical equipment bay and are shipped with 5.25-inch, half-height mounting hardware to permit a choice of available 3.5-inch or 5.25-inch mounting locations. The TR4 external drive can be mounted either horizontally or vertically without affecting the drive operation.

Hardware requirements for IBM systems
The 4.0/8.0 GB TR4 Internal SCSI Tape Drive is supported on the follow- ing IBM platforms.

• (1) Requires SCSI host adapter if one not already in system
• (2) Requires PS/2 Installation Kit (PN 44H3120, FC 4420).
  
  

Hardware requirements for non-IBM systems
The TR4 Internal SCSI Tape Drive is supported in most IBM AT compatible personal computers with a Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI) controller and an available 3.5-inch or 5.25-inch bay. Use of the accompanying software also requires an installed CD-ROM drive.

Software requirements
The following is a list of tape backup software applications that are available with this product. Please note that hardware device support is continuously updated by OEM software suppliers. Check with IBM if your software is not listed. These applications are made available on the CD included in the option kit and their use requires that a CD-ROM drive be installed in the system.

Compatibility
This drive is supported in IBM-compatible systems that adhere to the Small Computer Systems Interface-2 (SCSI-2) standards (ANSI X3T0.2186-190 ).

The 4.0/8.0 GB TR4 Internal SCSI Tape Drive is compatible with the 16-Bit AT Fast SCSI Adapter (Plug and Play) (part number 06H9649, FC 2341).

In addition, support for the 4.0/8.0 GB TR4 Internal SCSI Tape Drive has been tested and verified for the following SCSI adapter cards:

Limitations
Some configurations may not be supported.

The 4.0/8.0 GB TR4 Internal SCSI Tape Drive is not supported for use with RAID SCSI control devices. It is intended for use with non-RAID SCSI controllers only.

Use of this device with a wide SCSI adapter will require the installation of a SCSI wide-to-narrow cable converter.
