General information
IBM is expanding its family of high-performance 7200 rpm drives with the Ultrastar 2XP 4.51GB and 9.1GB Wide Ultra SCSI hard disk drives. These drives offer ultra-high-performance storage to satisfy high-performance disk drive storage needs by combining 4.51GB and 9.10GB capacities with a Wide Ultra SCSI interface. They feature average read seek times of 7.5 ms (4.51GB) and 8.5 ms (9.10GB), a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, and a maximum synchronous burst transfer rate of 40 MB/sec.

The Ultrastar 2XP drives have the industry standard S.M.A.R.T. (Self Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) feature that can provide advanced warning of an impending drive failure when used with the appropriate software, for example IBM's TME 10 Netfinity To protect customer investments in Predictive Failure Analysis server reliability software and hardware, S.M.A.R.T. implements a compatible failure reporting scheme.

The Ultrastar 2XP's advanced design provides high levels of reliability in a high-performance solution. Enhanced electronics integration, Magneto-Resistive (MR) heads, and no-ID sector formatting provide the foundation for a more reliable design. IBM MR head technology supports the Ultrastar 2XP's 1GB per 3.5-inch platter density. Increasing platter densities results in fewer parts and higher reliability and performance.

(1) Requires SCSI adapter such as IBM PC Server SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PC adapter (94G3771) and PC Server cable kit (SCW701Y).
(2) Requires PC Server air baffle (94G7001) for installations of two or more of these drives.
(3) Some models require PC Server cable kit (SCW701Y) if expanding beyond four SCSI devices.
(4) Kit 70G8165 required to install in 5.25" bay.
(5) Requires PC Server hot-swap drive tray SCSI Wide (SHST03Y) for installation into hot-swap bays.
(6) Requires PC Server SCSI-2 Fast/Wide hot-swap drive tray III (SHST05Y) for installation into hot-swap bays of new, type III, hot-swap backplanes.
(7) This drive is not supported in the upper 5.25" bay of this system.
(8) Supports the NetWare Unit and SMP operating systems only.

Hardware requirements for non IBM systems
The Ultrastar 2XP 4.51GB and 9.1GB Wide Ultra SCSI hard disk drives are supported on non-IBM platforms that utilize SCSI-2 compliant controllers.

Software requirements
  • OS/2 2.1
  • OS/2 Warp
  • OS/2 2.11 SMP
  • OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 and 4.0
  • Banyan Vines 5.x
  • DOS 5.xx, 6.xx, 7.xx
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1x
  • Microsoft Windows 95
  • Novell NetWare 3.12, 4.0x, 4.1SMP
  • SCO Open Desktop 3.0/Open Server 5.0
  • Windows NT 3.51, 4.0
Compatibility
The drive adheres to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) SCSI-2 X3.131:1994 standard.

Limitations
  • Under DOS, the maximum partition size is approximately 2GB. You may have to install multiple partitions to realize the full capacity of the drive.
  • Active termination must be used on the SCSI bus and the cable length should be kept to 3 meters maximum (for attachment of up to 4 devices), or 1.5 meters (for attachment of up to 8 devices). You should consider this information especially when configuring external SCSI devices.
  • The Ultrastar 2XP 4.51GB and 9.1GB Wide Ultra SCSI hard disk drives are among the highest performance 3.5-inch drives currently available. These high-performance drives consume correspondingly higher power and dissipate correspondingly more heat. As such, all configurations in which these drives are used should be reviewed and monitored for adequate power generation and heat dissipation.
