Abstract

IBM NetMEDIA Systems Management Adapter card overview

Content

General Information

The IBM NetMEDIA Systems Management Adapter card is designed to work in combination with the IBM NetMEDIA Storage Expansion Unit EL. This adapter improves on the base storage expansion box by providing the following functions:
  • Eases the constraints on the overall length of the external SCSI cable. The adapter works as a repeater; therefore, the internal SCSI wire length inside the NetMEDIA box does not count against the overall length of a single SCSI channel.
  • Acts as a Low Voltage Differential SCSI (LVDS) interface. Using this adapter, an LVDS channel can be attached to the NetMEDIA box and the drives inside the box can be Single Ended (SE) SCSI. The adapter converts the external LVDS signal to a 4-drop internal SE SCSI signal. However, the NetMEDIA box appears as one LVDS device on the LVDS channel.
The NetMEDIA Systems Management Adapter gives Netfinity customers added benefits including:
  • Advanced Systems Management functions, such as:
Remote system ID queriesMonitoring capability for temperature, power supplies, and fan conditions

On-board electronic SCSI signal termination that allows the NetMEDIA box to be powered off without disruption to the host

Provides independent dual SCSI channel operation
Enables tape array and mirroring applications
