Configuring mailreader to use a port other than the default SMTP port 25 and POP port 110

Question & Answer

Question

How do you configure IBM Rational RequisitePro and IBM Rational ClearQuest use mailreader which parses information through e-mail into the respective backend databases to use non default ports?

Answer

The information contained in this technote explains how mailreader can be set to use ports other than the default port 25 for SMTP and port 110 for POP.

RequisitePro and ClearQuest both use mailreader: RequisitePro uses mailreader to parse e-mail from discussions that are created with a RequisitePro project; ClearQuest uses mailreader to parse e-mail into a user database that will either submit a new record or modify an existing one.

When configuring RequisitePro projects or ClearQuest user databases with mailreader you must ensure that the mail server uses port 25 for SMTP and 110 for POP. Mailreader is hard coded to use these ports by default.

If your mailserver is set to use a port ID that is not 25 for SMTP and 110 for POP you must specify the port when configuring a mailbox. You can specify this during the configuration of each mailbox where the SMTP and POP server hostname is entered. When entering the SMTP and or POP server you must specify the port that is being used if the port is not 25 for SMTP and 110 for POP. You can specify a different port by adding a colon : after the mail server name with the port ID.

Example:

<servername>:portid

myserver.company.com:548
