DFHFC0532 Auto journal or forward recovery log not opened after logger failure

Troubleshooting

Problem

You receive message DFHFC0532 OPEN of file failed because the automatic journal could not be opened. This occurs after you fix a logger problem. In this case, you had been receiving messages IEC070I RC 104, DFHLG07775 RSN 409, DFHLG0772 RSN 85D.

Symptom

You could not offload an autojournal logstream due to end of volume errors. You receive messages:

IEC070I
IEC070I 104-204 xxxx.xxxxxxxx.DFHJ01.A0000045.DATA.

DFHLG0775 The MVS logger has returned an alert during operation IXGWRITE for log stream xxxx.xxxxxxxx.DFHJ01. The log stream writer offload task is failing. MVS logger codes: X'00000004' X'00000409'.

DFHLG0772 An error has occurred during MVS logger operation IXGWRITE for log stream
xxxx.xxxxxxxx
.DFHJ01. MVS logger codes: X'00000008', X'0000085D'.

After receiving these errors, you resolved the logstream problem but the CICS region was not able to process application transactions. You also notice DFHFC0532 which indicates that CICS could not open the automatic journal. When CICS tries to connect to the logstream you receive:

DFHFC0532 Non-RLS OPEN of file BIGG failed because the automatic journal could not be opened.

Cause

CEMT command was not entered to enable the journal.

Resolving The Problem

To set the Auto Journals or Forward Recovery logstreams back in service:

  1. Make sure that the initial problem is resolved

  2. Enter CEMT I Journalname(xxxxxxxx) where xxxxxxxx is the journalname.

  3. If this fails with "FAI (Failed)", enter:
    CEMT SET Journalname(xxxxxxxx) STATUS(ENABLED)
