Define an Item Classification

About this task

You can use itemclassifications for tasks such as sourcing associating servicesdetermining shipping preferences and so on. By defining an item classificationyou can identify an item attribute as having a specified use in IBM? Sterling Selling and Fulfillment Foundation.

You can define all the classification details for anitem from the Item Classifications screen. If an item attribute (fieldsthat are displayed in this screen) is associated to a classificationyou can select a classification value for that field. If an item attributeis not associated to the classification you can manually enter thevalue for that field.

Note: For all the child itemsof a Variation item the Item Classifications screen is displayedas a read-only screen because the values defined in a classificationfor a variation item are inherited by all the child items of the variationitem.

To define an item classification:

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the Item Classificationsscreen. To navigate to the Item Classifications screen perform thefollowing steps:
    1. Log in to Sterling Business Center as an ItemAdministrator.
    2. From the Products home pageclick Find Item in the Catalog panel.
    3. From the Item Search screen that is displayed enterthe search criteria and then click Search toview a list of all the available items. Alternatively use eitherthe Basic Search or the Advanced Search option to narrowdown the list of items displayed.
    4. The Primary Information screen is displayed. In the Items panelthat is displayed click the Item ID hyperlink. Alternativelydouble-click the row containing the Item ID.
    5. In the Related Tasks panel click ManageClassification Values.

      The Item Classificationsscreen is displayed.

  2. In the Standard Classification areafor all the item fields you can:
    • Click the Search icon to view the list ofavailable classification values and select a value for the field.This option is available only if the item field is associated to theclassification to which the item belongs.
    • Enter the appropriate values for the fields.

      The following table lists the fields displayed in the StandardClassification area:

      Harmonized Code
      The item's harmonized code.
      Commodity Code
      The item's commodity code.
      ECCN Number
      The item's Export Commodity Control Number.
      UNSPSC
      The item's United Nations Standard Productand Services Code.
      Tax Product Class
      The item's tax product class.
      Model
      The item's model number.
      Cost Posting Classification
      The item's cost posting classification.
      Schedule Code
      The item's Schedule B Code.
      NMFC Code
      The item's National Motor Freight Code.
      NMFC Class
      The item's National Motor Freight Code Class.
      NAICS Code
      The item's North American Industry ClassificationSystem code.
      Hazardous Material Class
      The item's hazardous material class.
      Is Hazardous Item
      Indicates if the item belongs to the hazardousmaterial class.
  3. In the Organization Classifications areafor all the fields you can:
    • Click the Search icon to view the list ofavailable classification values and select a value for the field.This option is available only if the item field is associated to theclassification to which the item belongs.
    • Enter the appropriate values for the fields.

      The following table lists the fields displayed in the OrganizationalClassification area:

      Product Line
      The item's product line defined accordingto your business practices.
      Item Type
      The item's type defined as per your businesspractices.
  4. In the fields in Operational Classificationsarea you can:
    • Click the Search icon to view the list ofavailable classification values and select a value for the field.This option is available only if the item field is associated to theclassification to which the item belongs.
    • Enter the appropriate values for the fields.

      The following table lists the fields displayed in the OperationalClassification area:

      Field
      Description
      Storage Type
      The item's storage type.

      Thestorage code indicates any special attributes of the item that mayrequire it to be stored at a certain location in a warehouse.

      Picking Type
      The item's picking type.

      The picking typeindicates how the item must be retrieved from its storage location.

      Velocity Code
      The item's velocity code.

      Thevelocity code indicates the item's turn over rate in a warehouse.

  5. In the Operational Classification areaselect the Operational Configuration Complete check box aftercompleting the operational configuration for the item.
  6. In the Item Classifications screen click Save.

    The item's classification is defined.
