Question
ITS standards
Answer
ITS standards
The IBM? Traffic Information Hub isdesigned in compliance with ITS and information technology (IT) standardsdefined and recognized by the transportation industry.
The following table lists the ITS and IT standards that the IBM Traffic Information Hub is developed incompliance with.
| Name | Description | Reference link |
|---|---|---|
| Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1) | The international standard developed by theInternational Telecommunication Union for defining the syntax of informationdata. It defines a number of simple data types and specifies a notationfor referencing these types and for specifying values of these types. | http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/studygroups/com17/languages/X.680-0207.pdf |
| Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) | Advanced Traveler Information Systems are aimedat providing users of the transportation system with more informationto make decisions about route choices estimate travel times andavoid congestion. Most ATIS technologies are also aimed at the motorvehicle operator. | http://www.standards.its.dot.gov/ |
| Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) | Systems that integrate technology in urban environmentswith the aim to reduce traffic congestion increase road safety andimprove the flow of vehicle traffic. Such systems use solutions tocongestion problems through the deployment of simple and reliablesensing communications and data-processing technologies. | http://www.standards.its.dot.gov/ |
| Center-to-Center (C2C) | Center-to-Center (C2C) communications spansthe entire ITS domain covering the exchange of data between computersphysically located in different transportation management center facilities. For example traffic management centers transit management centerspublic safety parking management centers). C2C standards enable thisdata exchange specifying what information is exchanged how and whenit is exchanged and the underlying transport mechanisms. C2C standardscan be divided into 2 categories: (1) the message and data contentand (2) the rules for exchanging the messages and data. | http://www.standards.its.dot.gov/Documents/advisories/adv_c2c.asp |
| Closed-circuit television (CCTV) | The use of video cameras to transmit a signalto a specific place on a limited set of monitors. | |
| Data Exchange (Datex) | One of the NTCIP defined standard for centerto center communications. Datex is a set of specifications for exchangingtraffic information in a standard format between disparate systems. It is aimed at harmonizing the exchange of traffic and travel informationat all levels applicable to road operators (non-urban and urban) andservice providers. It facilitates the electronic exchange of trafficand travel related data between traffic centers including cross borderexchange. Datex II is a new generation structured data model by usingUML this features a platform independent model that can be mappedto multiple implementation platforms. | http://www.datex2.eu/ |
| Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) | Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) are LED screensthat operate as part of a roadway traffic control system. Dynamicmessage signs display prohibitory warning or announcement messagesbased on the traffic situation and are installed throughout a transportationnetwork. This standard allows integration of DMS devices and productsfrom multiple manufacturers into a single system by using standardcommunications and data. | http://www.standards.its.dot.gov/Documents/advisories/dms_advisory.htm |
| External Centers (EC) | An external center is a transportation systemthat uses the center-to-center services provided by a TMDD owner centeror other data center. | http://www.standards.its.dot.gov/ |
| Extensible Markup Language (XML) | A standard metalanguage for defining markuplanguages that is based on Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). | http://www.w3.org/XML/ |
| Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) | An international educational and scientificassociation of transportation professionals including engineerstransportation planners consultants educators and researchers.Founded in 1930 ITE facilitates the application of technology andscientific principles to research planning functional design implementationoperation policy development and management for any mode of groundtransportation. More information about ITE can be found on their website: | http://www.ite.org/ |
| Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) | A term used in the transportation industry torefer to using information and communications technology to deliverefficient and reliable services within a transportation infrastructure. These services include managing traffic archived data and incidentinformation. ITS standards are open-interface standards that establishcommunication rules for how traffic systems devices products andcomponents can interconnect exchange information and interact. | http://www.its.dot.gov/ |
| Location Referencing Message Specification (LRMS) | Describes a set of standard interfaces for thetransmission of location references among different components ofIntelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The LRMS facilitates themovement of ITS data on a transportation network providing a commonlanguage for the expression of location among the different components.LRMS interfaces define standard meanings for the content of locationreference messages and standard public domain formats for the presentationof location references to application software. | http://www.standards.its.dot.gov/fact_sheet.asp?f=92 |
| National Transportation Communications for IntelligentTransportation System (ITS) Protocol (NTCIP) | A family of communication standards for transmittingdata and messages between computer systems used in intelligent transportationsystems. NTCIP provides both the rules for communicating and the vocabularynecessary to allow electronic traffic control equipment from differentmanufacturers to operate with each other as a system. The NTCIP isthe first set of standards for the transportation industry that allowstraffic control systems to be built by using a "mix and match" approachwith equipment from different manufacturers. Therefore NTCIP standardsreduce the need for reliance on specific equipment vendors and customizedone-of-a-kind software. | http://www.ntcip.org/ |
| Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) | A non-profit educational and scientific organizationdedicated to advancing mobility technology to better serve humanity.Over 90000 engineers and scientists that develop technical informationon all forms of self-propelled vehicles. | http://www.sae.org/about/ |
| Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) | A lightweight XML-based protocol for exchanginginformation in a decentralized distributed environment. SOAP canbe used to query and return information and start services acrossthe Internet. | http://www.w3.org/TR/soap/ |
| Traffic Management Centers | The hub of a transportation management system.Information about the transportation network is collected and combinedwith other operational and control data to manage the transportationnetwork and produce traveler information. There are several NTCIPstandards for Center-to-Center Communications defined for trafficmanagement centers. | http://www.ntcip.org/library/standards/default.asp?documents=yes&standard=9010 |
| TMDD Traffic Management Data Dictionary Standardfor Center-to-Center Communications | A standard used by the transportation industryto define and support center-to-center interface communications aspart of the regional deployment of an intelligent transport system(ITS). TMDD provides the dialogs message sets data frames and dataelements to manage the shared use of these devices and the regionalsharing of data and incident management responsibility. TMDD is definedunder the National Transportation Communications for Intelligent TransportationSystem Protocol (NTCIP) family of standards. | http://www.ite.org/standards/tmdd/ |
| Uniform Resource Locator (URL) | The unique address of an information resourcethat is accessible in a network such as the Internet. The URL includesthe abbreviated name of the protocol used to access the informationresource and the information used by the protocol to locate the informationresource. | http://www.w3.org/Addressing/URL/Overview.html |
| Web Services Description Language (WSDL) | An XML-based specification for describing networkedservices as a set of endpoints operating on messages containing eitherdocument-oriented or procedure-oriented information. WSDL is one ofthe NTCIP defined standards for center to center communications. | http://www.w3.org/2002/ws/desc/ |
