Options - General Tab
Use the General tab of the Optionspage to define default settings and display options that are usedthroughout Sterling TMS.
Ifyou are licensed to use the Freight Payment or Execution modulesyou can also define the Options - General tabsettings in those modules.
The General tabof the Options page contains the following sections.
Time Default Settings on the Options Page
Definethe following settings in the Time Default section of the Options- General tab:
- Time Zone
Select the time zone you want to use for events that are displayedin Sterling TMS. Thissetting applies to events that are not tied to locations such as:
- The date and time the shipment was created.
- The time a contract proposal was accepted.
For example a shipper manager who is based in Los Angelesmight manage shipments that are departing from all over the country.This user might choose to show tendering dates and times in PacificStandard Time (PST).
An event that is tied to a location suchas a departure or arrival always uses the time zone of that location.
Forexample:
- A shipment departs from Philadelphia and arrives in Los Angeles.
- The pickup appointment in Philadelphia is displayed in EasternStandard Time (EST).
- The delivery appointment in Los Angeles is displayed in PacificStandard Time (PST).
- 24-Hour Time Format
Select one of these options:
- Yes
Display time using the 24-hour time format. For example 4p.m. is displayed as 16:00 and 11:30 p.m. is displayed as 23:30.
- No
Display time using the 12-hour time format. For example 4p.m. is displayed as 4:00 and 11:30 p.m. is displayed as 11:30.
Locale Settings on the Options Page
Definethe following settings in the Locale section of the Options- General tab:
- Locale
Select a language for viewing the Sterling TMS user interface.
Bydefault the Options page displays the locale you selected on the Sterling TMS login page.If you change the locale on the Options page Sterling TMS switches tothat language as soon as you save the page. The new locale is alsodisplayed the next time you launch the Sterling TMS login page.

- Date Format
Specify how you want to view dates in Sterling TMS tables.You can select one of these options:
- dd-mmm-yy
For example 01-Aug-15.
- dd-mmm-yyyy
For example 01-Aug-2015.
- dd-mm-yyyy
For example 01-08-2015.
- mm-dd-yyyy
For example 08-01-2015.
- yyyy-mm-dd
For example 2015-08-01.
- yy-mm-dd
For example 15-08-01.
The default date format is dd-mmm-yy.
Notes:- This setting controls how dates are displayed in Sterling TMS tables.This setting does not affect the format when you select dates fororders shipments and other entries.
- This setting does not affect the date format on the Mass Entryand Mass Edit pages. You always enter dates in mmddyy formaton these pages.
Units of Measure on the Options Page
Definethe following settings in the Units of Measure section of theOptions - General tab:
- Distance Units of Measurement
Select one of these options:
- English
Display all distances as miles. This is the default value.
- Metric
Display all distances as kilometers.
This setting overrides the unit of measurement specifiedin the original shipment.
For example:
- You set Distance Units of Measurement to Metric.
- A shipment is submitted in an EDI 204 transaction. The distanceis specified as 1000 miles.
- When you view the shipment in Execution the distance is displayedas 1609 kilometers.
- Physical Dimensions Unit of Measurement
Select one of these options:
- No Conversion
The shipment dimensions are displayed using the unit of measurementin the original shipment. This is the default value.
- English
Display all weights as pounds. Display all volumes as cubicfeet. Display height length and width as feet.
- Metric
Display all weights as kilograms. Display all volumes as cubicmeters. Display height length and width as meters.
For example you set Physical DimensionsUnits of Measurement to the default No Conversion:
- An EDI shipment is submitted with a weight of 20000 pounds. Whenyou view the shipment in Execution the weight is displayed as 20000pounds.
- An EDI shipment is submitted with a weight of 40000 kilograms.When you view the shipment in Execution the weight is displayed as40000 kilograms.
As another example you set Physical DimensionsUnits of Measurement to Metric:
- An EDI shipment is submitted with a weight of 20000 pounds. Whenyou view the shipment in Execution the weight is displayed as 44000kilograms.
- An EDI shipment is submitted with a weight of 40000 kilograms.When you view the shipment in Execution the weight is still displayedas 40000 kilograms.
Monitor Mode on the Options Page
Use the MonitorMode setting on the Options - General tabto control when Sterling TMS refreshesthe shipping data.
For example select Refresh Every10 Minutes if you want Sterling TMS to refreshthe shipment information every 10 minutes.
The default valueis 0 which means that Sterling TMS does not automaticallyrefresh the data.
- To improve system performance you are required to set the MonitorMode option each time you log on to Sterling TMS. The systemdoes not save the setting across multiple browser sessions.
- If Sterling TMS refresheswhile you are entering changes in a page you will lose any changesthat you have not saved.
- You can manually update your shipping data by clicking Refresh atthe top of the main Sterling TMS window.
Default Page Size on the Options Page
Youcan control how many rows are displayed in Sterling TMS tables. Definethe Default Number of Rows Per Page on Tables settingin the Default Page Size section of the Options - General tab.
Bydefault each table displays 25 rows per page.
Cache Settings on the Options Page
You cancontrol whether Sterling TMS preservesdata in your tables when you move from one page to another. Definethe Set the Cache Table Results When Possible settingin the Caching section of the Options - General tab.
Asa best practice leave this option set to Yeswhich is the default setting. The following example shows how Sterling TMS preservesyour table data:
- You run a search on the Shipments tab.
- You select a shipment and click Edit toupdate the shipment.
- When you return to the Shipments tab theoriginal search results from Step 1 are displayed.
Set this option to No to disable tablecaching. When you navigate to a different page and then return tothe first page Sterling TMS clearsthe search results and displays an empty table.
Search Settings on the Options Page
Definethe following settings in the Searching section of the Options- General tab:
- Max Time Window
You can specify how Sterling TMS searches forshipments based on:
- Planned Departure Date
- Planned Arrival Date
Use Max Time Window Width to Consider When SearchingBy Date to specify the number of days to include in thesearch for the planned departure window or planned arrival window.
Thedefault value is 20 days.
This setting is designed to improvesearch performance:
- If you set the Max Time Window to a lower value the search takesless time but might return fewer shipments.
- If you set the Max Time Window to a higher value the search takeslonger but might return more shipments.

- Use File Compression for Report Searches
Use report searches when you want to specify a date range inyour search. Select one of the following options:
- Yes

Sterling TMS savesthe report search results as a compressed file and sends the fileto you as an email attachment.
- No
-
Sterling TMS doesnot save the report search results as a compressed file and does notsend you an email. You can only view the search results online inthe system.
The default value is Yes.
Load Builder Settings on the Options Page
Youcan leave the Load Builder option set to the default. This optionis not used in Contract Management.
User-Preferred Currency on the Options Page
Eachuser can select the currency that Sterling TMS uses to displaycharges in various fields and tables. You can select your User-PreferredCurrency on the Options - General tab.
Forexample you might want to view charges in Canadian Dollars or MexicanPesos.
In Execution Sterling TMS displays thecurrency as follows:
- Standard columns such as Price and Base Rate Price are displayedin the currency defined in the contract used to rate the shipment.
- Optional columns such as User Currency Price and User Base RatePrice are displayed in your user-preferred currency. These columnsare hidden by default.
The default value for User-Preferred Currency is Select.If you do not specify a different currency Sterling TMS uses the defaultcurrency the shipper administrator defined for your organization.

Changing Your Password on the Options Page
Tochange your Sterling TMS passwordclick Set New Password on the Options - General tab.You will use the new password the next time you log on.
