Question & Answer

Question

Optimizing a Route in the Itinerary

Answer

Optimizing a Route in the Itinerary

About this task

When you build a multi-stop shipment you can review andchange the itinerary. You can use the route optimization feature toreduce the total distance required to make all the pickups and deliveries.

The following workflow shows how Sterling TMS processesthe optimized route for a truckload shipment.

Note: The route optimizationfeature is only supported if your organization uses PC Miler as yourmileage source. Route optimization is not supported by MileMaker.

Procedure

  1. Select the shipment on the Shipments taband click Itinerary. The Itinerary page opensand displays the Stops table.
  2. Click Optimize Route.
  3. Sterling TMS determinesthe first stop which is the shipment origin.
  4. Sterling TMS findsthe location that is the shortest distance from the first stop. Thesystem takes into account that the freight must be picked up beforeit is delivered.
  5. Sterling TMS selectsthis location as the second stop.
  6. Sterling TMS repeatsthe process for the remaining stops. For example the system looksfor the location that is the shortest distance from the second stopand assigns it as the third stop.
  7. You can view the optimized route in the Stops table.
Note: When you optimize a route on the Itinerary page Sterling TMS builds theroute to minimize the total distance. This process works differentlyfrom the route optimization feature in Consolidation Workbench. InConsolidation Workbench you can use the Build Route Using optionto control how Sterling TMS optimizesthe route.
