Question & Answer

Question

Carrier Selection Table

Answer

Carrier Selection Table

The Carrier Selection page displays the contract lanesfor carriers that are eligible to take a shipment. Carriers are listedbased on rules your shipper administrator set up in the Route Guide.

Eachrow in the Carrier Selection table displays information about onecarrier contract lane that is eligible to take the shipment. The followingcolumns are displayed by default:

Origin

Shows the origin of the contract lane for each carrier.

Destination

Shows the destination of the contract lane for each carrier.

Carrier and SCAC

Shows the name and SCAC of the carrier.

The Carrier Selectionpage can display multiple lanes for the same carrier if the lanesall match the criteria defined in the Route Guide.

Contract Amount

Shows the total cost of the shipment using the currency fromthe contract used to rate the shipment.

The contract amountincludes the following charges:

  • The linehaul rate. If the rate was defined as a per mile charge Sterling TMS uses the distancefrom the shipment origin to the destination to calculate the totallinehaul rate.
  • Any planned accessorial charges.
Tip: You can use the Amount column to show the shipmentcost in your preferred currency.
Rank

Shows the rank for the carrier in this contract lane if yourshipper administrator defined one. Multiple carriers can be listedwith the same rank.

Carrier Type

Shows whether the carrier was defined in this lane as a primarysecondary or backup carrier.

You can choose which carriertypes appear on the Carrier Selection page. Select the CarrierType Display on the Shipments tabof the Execution Options page.

Factored Cost

Shows the penalty or discount value if your shipper administratordefined a factored cost for this carrier lane.

For examplethe Factored Cost column might contain these entries:

  • A 15% Discount for a carrier that has superiorservice in this lane.
  • or 20% Penalty for a carrier that has poorservice in this lane.

Sterling TMS appliesthe discount or penalty to the actual carrier rate and displays theadjusted rate in the Calculated Factored Cost column.

For moreinformation about factored costs see the IBM? SterlingTransportation Management System Contract AdministrationGuide.

Calculated Factored Cost

Shows the adjusted shipment rate after Sterling TMS applied thediscount or penalty shown in the Factored Cost column. The rate isshown in the currency from the contract used to rate the shipment.

Forexample:

  • The Contract Amount column for the carrier shows $500.
  • The Factored Cost column shows $45 Discount.
  • The Calculated Factored Cost column shows $455.($500 - $45 = $455)
Note: The factored costs are for your referenceonly and are not used to calculate actual rates. When you tender theshipment Sterling TMS usesthe contracted rate for the carrier.
Amount

Shows the shipment cost in your preferred currency. Dependingon how the carriers are sorted the Amount column shows one of thefollowing values:

  • If the carriers are sorted by rate or rank the Amount shows thetotal shipment cost from the Contract Amount column.
  • If the carriers are sorted by factored cost the Amount showsthe rate from the Calculated Factored Cost column.

The following tips show how to use the Amount column:

  • If the carriers are sorted by rate you can use the CustomizeTable feature to move the Amount column next to the Contract Amountcolumn. You can easily compare the shipment cost in your user-preferredcurrency (the amount) to the shipment cost in the contract currency(the contract amount).
  • If your organization only works with one currency you might wantto hide the Amount column. For example all your contracts use U.S.dollars your organization profile is set up to use U.S. dollarsand you have not selected a different currency. The Amount columnwould always show the same value (in U.S. dollars) as the ContractAmount or Calculated Factored Cost column.
Transit Time

The Transit Time column appears on the Carrier Selection pageif the Route Guide used to process the shipment is set up to considerthe transit time.

You can compare the transit times for yourcarriers to help determine the best carrier to deliver your shipment.

Off-Line Tender

Each carrier defines whether they want to accept shipment tendersfrom your organization using Sterling TMS. This columnis set to Yes for a carrier that does not wantto accept tenders through Sterling TMS. These organizationsare referred to as off-line carriers.

If you want to use thiscarrier follow this process:

  1. Phone or fax the carrier and arrange for them to take the shipment.
  2. Select the carrier lane and tender the shipment.
  3. Sterling TMS automaticallysets the Plan Status for the shipment to Covered andthe Shipment Status to Not Tracked.
  4. As an option you can print a tender confirmation sheet and faxit to the carrier.
Auto-Accept

Shows whether the carrier is set up to automatically accepttenders from your shipper organization.

If Auto-Accept isset to Yes and you perform a broadcast tender Sterling TMS does not selectthe carrier by default. You can still manually select the carrierand include it in the broadcast tender.
