Process for Managing the Shipping Life Cycle

Use the following process to move a shipment through its life cyclefrom accepting the tender to arriving at the destination. This workflowcovers a carrier that is managing shipments online in Sterling TMS.

  1. Log on to Sterling TMS andclick the Execution link at the top of theWelcome page. The Active tab opens.
  2. Open the Tenders tab where you can managethe tendering process. You can choose the loads you want to deliverfor your Sterling TMS shippers:
    1. Search for shipments that your shippers have tendered to you.
    2. Review the shipment details or maps to learn about the scheduleand requirements of each load.
  3. Accept or decline each tender. When you accept a tender Sterling TMS changes the PlanStatus to Covered and moves theshipment from the Tenders tab to the Active tab.
  4. Open the Active tab and search for thecovered shipments you want to manage.
  5. Select a shipment and click Itinerary toopen the Itinerary page. You can review the pickup and delivery stopsand the orders associated with the shipment.
  6. Select the first stop at the shipment origin and click Appointment tomake a pickup appointment:
    • If the shipper has authorized your company to use the Dock Schedulingmodule at the origin location the Docks tabof the Execution module opens.
    • If you are not profiled to do dock scheduling at the origin theDock Appointments page opens.
  7. Make additional appointments for the pickups and deliveries atother stops in the route.
  8. You can view the shipping manifest for each order in the shipment:
    1. Select the order on the Itinerary page and click ViewDetails. The View Details page opens.
    2. Click Add/View Items to open the ShippingUnits page. A separate row is listed for each shipping unit entryin the manifest.
    3. Select a shipping unit and click Edit toopen the Edit Shipping Unit and Items page. You can view each lineitem in the order including the dimensions description and freightclass.
  9. When the shipment is ready to be picked up your shipper can changethe Shipment Status to Loaded.You can search for shipments on the Active tabthat have the status set to Loaded.
  10. Pick up the shipment at the origin. The shipper or carrier canspecify when the load has departed from the origin:
    1. On the Itinerary page select the first stop and click UpdateStatus.
    2. Change the status to Depart. Sterling TMS changes the ShipmentStatus of the shipment to Departed.All orders on the shipment that have the same origin are also setto Departed.
  11. For a multi-stop delivery the shipper or carrier can set eachorder to Departed when the carrier leaves thatstop:
    1. On the Itinerary page select the pickup stop for the order andclick Update Status.
    2. Change the status to Depart.
  12. You can update the delivery schedule while the shipment is intransit:
    • Click ETA on the Itinerary page to updatethe estimated time of arrival (ETA).
    • Click Current Position on the Itinerarypage to enter the location of the freight. Sterling TMS can use thecurrent position to calculate an updated ETA.
  13. If the shipment has multiple delivery stops the shipper or carrierchanges the orders for each stop to Arrived:
    1. On the Itinerary page select the delivery stop and click UpdateStatus.
    2. Change the status to Arrive. Sterling TMS sets the statusto Arrived for the orders that are deliveredto that stop. The status of the shipment remains as Departed untilthe shipment reaches the final stop.
  14. When the carrier arrives at the final destination the shipperor carrier changes the status to Arrive onthe Update Status page:
    • Sterling TMS changesthe Shipment Status of the shipment to Arrived.
    • All orders on the shipment that have the same destination arealso set to Arrived.
  15. In Sterling TMSthe shipment is considered complete when the status is set to Arrived atthe final destination. Optionally the shipper can mark the shipmentas Unloaded.
