Summary
IBM i2 Enterprise Insight Analysis is delivered with the IBM Java Runtime. A vulnerability was discovered in the IBM Java Runtime that can leave the product vulnerable to attacks allowing arbitrary code to be injected.
Vulnerability Details
DESCRIPTION: Eclipse OpenJ9 could allow a local attacker to gain elevated privileges on the system, caused by the failure to restrict the use of Java Attach API to connect to an Eclipse OpenJ9 or IBM JVM on the same machine and use Attach API operations to only the process owner. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute untrusted native code and gain elevated privileges on the system.

Remediation/Fixes
Attach API is enabled by default on Windows, Linux, and AIX JVMs and can be disabled using the command line option -Dcom.ibm.tools.attach.enable=no
In IBM i2 Enterprise Insight Analysis version 2.1.8 and later, the attach API is disabled prior to deployment by default. For previous releases, the user can modify their environments using the steps below to manually disable it.
Workarounds and Mitigations
1. Locate the jvm.options (usually <i2AnalyzeRoot>/deploy/wlp/usr/servers/opal-server)
2. Open the file using a text editor
3. Add the following line at the top of the file:
-Dcom.ibm.tools.attach.enable=no
4. Save and close the file
5. In the (<i2AnalyzeRoot>/toolkit/scripts) directory, run the following command to restart the application server:
setup -t restartLiberty
