SPSS Modeler Subscription or Watson Studio Desktop Sign-In Error - Cannot verify license.

Question & Answer

Question

Upon launch of IBM SPSS Modeler Subscription or Watson Studio desktop, I see a Sign-In Error dialog box that indicates a problem with the license and suggests the issue is with internet access. The exact error reads:

"License verification failed.  Ensure you have internet access and click Retry,
If you already have internet access, the SPSS License Server may need to be allowlisted from your corporate firewall.  Refer to your firewall documentation or contact your system administrator and add the follow URL to allowlist:  https://spsssub.ibm.com/licsrv.  For other cases refer to this link for more information."

Answer

To correct this issue, configure your internet security program/firewall to allow access to the following URLs:

https://spsssub.ibm.com/licsrv

Also allow access to the following executable files:

For Modeler Subscription:
spssengine.exe
jxbrowser-chromium.exe
java.exe
javaw.exe
modelerclient.exe

If utilizing Extension Hub (R/Python Hub Extensions external to Modeler) here is information where access will be required.
http://raw.githubusercontent.com (151.101.0.133)
https://github.com (192.30.253.113)
http:/ibmpredictiveanalytics.github.io (185.199.108.153)
More information related to Extension Hub:
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SS3RA7_sub/modeler_r_nodes_ddita/spss/base/extension_hub.html

At the bottom of the above page is a link.  If connecting to the Internet via a proxy, you may receive an error
similar to "Some features are not available because no Internet connection was detected" when you try to open the Extension Hub
via the Extensions > Extension Hub menu option.
To resolve this, you add the following parameters to the # JVM options in the jvm.cfg file (located in the config directory of your SPSS Modeler installation).
Save the file and restart SPSS Modeler.
options, "-DproxyHost=proxyIP"
options, " -DproxyPort=proxyPort"

For Watson Studio desktop:

IBM Watson Studio.exe (C:\Program Files\IBM Watson Studio\IBM Watson Studio.exe)
nginx.exe (C:\Program Files\IBM Watson Studio\resources\application\core\nginx\nginx.exe)
Rscript.exe (C:\Program Files\IBM Watson Studio\resources\application\runtimes\r\R-3.5.1\bin\Rscript.exe and
C:\Program Files\IBM Watson Studio\resources\application\runtimes\r\R-3.5.1\bin\x64\Rscript.exe)
java.exe (C:\Program Files\IBM Watson Studio\resources\application\runtimes\modeler_runtime\modeler_server\jre\bin\java.exe)
python.exe (C:\ProgramData\WatsonStudioDesktop\miniconda3\envs\desktop\python.exe)
node.exe (C:\Program Files\IBM Watson Studio\resources\application\dependencies\node\node.exe)
jupyter.exe (C:\ProgramData\WatsonStudioDesktop\miniconda3\envs\desktop\Scripts\jupyter.exe)
jupyter-notebook.exe (C:\ProgramData\WatsonStudioDesktop\miniconda3\envs\desktop\Scripts\jupyter-notebook.exe )

Since the method for adding exclusions is different for each internet security software provider, please contact the software provider for details regarding how to 'white-list' files and file types in the vendor's internet security program.

For users who are completely behind a corporate firewall which is a separate firewall from their workstation: The IT admin may need to specify both the license server URL and the port number for his workstation. For http and https connection, the default port numbers 80 and 443 are used.

Also note that SPSS subscription software cannot be used through corporate proxy, where governed by group policy.
