Cause

The message "AIX is not supported on a hosting partition - boot not permitted."  means the VIOS partition (Environment: Virtual I/O Server) was rebooted using an AIX boot device.

Environment

PowerVM VIOS 2.2 managed by an HMC

Diagnosing The Problem

Boot the VIOS partition into SMS to determine the current boot device order.  Note: SMS will display the VIOS version if the boot disk(s) found contain a VIOS OS.

Resolving The Problem

Boot the VIOS to SMS Menu to set the VIOS boot disk as the first boot device.  For more details, refer to How to boot VIOS to SMS via Hardware Management Console (HMC)
> Example 3 - How to Change Boot Device Order to Boot from disk (VIOS OS/rootvg)
