Issue Overview
IBM is currently investigating a reported issue affecting systems running IBM i 7.6 TR2 or IBM i 7.5 TR8. Installing the Technology Refresh (TR) can cause a complete loss of network connectivity on partitions using Virtual Ethernet adapter type 268C. IBM is actively working to identify the root cause and appropriate corrective action.
Affected Environments
This issue affects:
IBM i 7.5 TR8 systems using Virtual Ethernet adapter type 268C
IBM i 7.6 TR2 systems using Virtual Ethernet adapter type 268C
If your environment includes either of the above configurations, please review the recommended actions below.
What's the Impact
Affected virtual ethernet adapters experience a complete loss of network connectivity, resulting in:
Possible loss of remote access to the partition
Application connectivity failures
Service interruptions affecting dependent systems
Reduced ability to remotely manage, monitor, or administer the system
Recommended Actions
For Systems Not Yet Upgraded If you are running Virtual Ethernet adapter type 268C, consider postponing the installation of IBM i 7.6 TR2 or IBM i 7.5 TR8 until additional guidance is available.
For Systems Already Affected For environments that have already installed the Technology Refresh and are experiencing this issue, please open a case with IBM support. The only known recovery method at this time is to perform a Licensed Internal Code (LIC) slip installation to restore the system to the previously installed LIC level prior to either R750 TR8 or R760 TR2.
For systems that meet the above criteria, at one of the affected TR levels and using virtual ethernet adapters, that are not exhibiting any issues, the path forward is a business decision based on risk acceptance. Understand that the only way to completely remove this exposure is to restore the system to the previously installed LIC level prior to either R750 TR8 or R760 TR2.
