Security Bulletin: IBM Integrated Analytics System (IIAS) is affected by multiple path traversal vulnerabilities due to pip

Security Bulletin

Summary

pip is used by IBM Integrated Analytics System as the standard Python package installer. Multiple vulnerabilities affect pip. CVE-2026-8643 involves improper sanitization of resolved absolute paths for console_scripts and gui_scripts entry points, where pip treats them as paths instead of file names, potentially allowing entry points to be installed outside the intended installation directory. CVE-2026-13346 involves incorrect handling of doubly-encoded package URLs from package indexes, which could allow files to be installed to arbitrary locations on disk even when installing wheel packages. This vulnerability requires interaction with a malicious package index and primarily impacts users running pip download with the --only-binary option. These vulnerabilities could allow attackers to manipulate file system locations and compromise the integrity of the system.

Vulnerability Details

CVEID:   CVE-2026-8643
DESCRIPTION:   pip would treat console_scripts and gui_scripts as paths instead of file names without sanitizing the resolved absolute path to the installation directory, leading to entry points being installed outside the installation directory.
CWE:   CWE-22: Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal')
CVSS Source:   NVD
CVSS Base score:   5.5
CVSS Vector:   (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N)

CVEID:   CVE-2026-13346
DESCRIPTION:   pip would incorrectly handle doubly-encoded package URLs from indexes allowing for files to be installed to arbitrary locations on disk even when installing wheels. This vulnerability requires downloading or installing a package from a malicious package index to succeed, malicious packages alone are not able to exploit this vulnerability. Note that this vulnerability only materially impacts users running `pip download` with the `--only-binary` option as installing source distributions from an untrusted index is already an unsafe operation that executes code during install time.
CWE:   CWE-36: Absolute Path Traversal
CVSS Source:   NVD
CVSS Base score:   6.5
CVSS Vector:   (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N)

Disclaimer

According to the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) is an "industry open standard designed to convey vulnerability severity and help to determine urgency and priority of response." IBM PROVIDES THE CVSS SCORES ""AS IS"" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. CUSTOMERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF ANY ACTUAL OR POTENTIAL SECURITY VULNERABILITY. In addition to other efforts to address potential vulnerabilities, IBM periodically updates the record of components contained in our product offerings. As part of that effort, if IBM identifies previously unidentified packages in a product/service inventory, we address relevant vulnerabilities regardless of CVE date. Inclusion of an older CVEID does not demonstrate that the referenced product has been used by IBM since that date, nor that IBM was aware of a vulnerability as of that date. We are making clients aware of relevant vulnerabilities as we become aware of them. "Affected Products and Versions" referenced in IBM Security Bulletins are intended to be only products and versions that are supported by IBM and have not passed their end-of-support or warranty date. Thus, failure to reference unsupported or extended-support products and versions in this Security Bulletin does not constitute a determination by IBM that they are unaffected by the vulnerability. Reference to one or more unsupported versions in this Security Bulletin shall not create an obligation for IBM to provide fixes for any unsupported or extended-support products or versions.
