VIOS Versions Supported on Power8 Systems

Question & Answer

Question

I have VIOS version 4.1.1.0 running on Power8 system, and I want to update the VIOS to 4.1.2.10.  Is 4.1.2.10 compatible with Power8? If not, what are the implications of updating from version 4.1.1.0?

Cause

System software map for IBM Power8 systems and PowerVM Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) shows the compatibility for VIOS versions higher than 4.1.1.0 as "Unverified" and "Refer to FLRT" for those higher VIOS versions show "Product unverified or incompatible".

Answer

An "Unverified" version does not necessarily mean that the version is unsupported. It means that the VIOS release was published after the standard of support for the Power system hardware model.

VIOS versions 3.1.4.60, 4.1.0.40 and higher, 4.1.1.10 and higher, and 4.1.2 are supported on Power8 and newer Power system hardware.
