Compatibility and Configuration Notes for IBM Storage Protect
Overview
The IBM TS7785 Virtual Tape Library is a disk-based storage device that emulates the IBM TS4500 tape library with IBM LTO-5 drives. The emulated library and drives can serve as backup targets for IBM Storage Protect Server.
Supported Emulation Modes
- Library emulation: IBM TS4500 (03584L32)
- Drive emulation: IBM LTO-5 (ULT3580-TD5)
Validated Configuration
The IBM TS7785 VTL emulations have been validated with following:
- IBM Linux Device Driver lin_tape-3.0.73-1
- IBM Storage Protect Server 8.2.2
| Component | Emulation Model | Firmware |
|---|---|---|
| Library | IBM 03584L32 | 0001 |
| Drive | IBM ULT3580-TD5 | 0001 |
Configuration Requirements
- Barcodes are required.
- Define the library using:
LIBType=VTLandRELABELSCRatch=YES - The
ELEMENT=AUTODETECToption is supported in theDEFINE/UPDATE DRIVEcommands. - The IBM tape device driver is required for the emulated IBM TS4500 library and IBM LTO-5 drives.
Unsupported Features
The following features are not supported on the TS7785 VTL:
- Append-only mode (CHECKTAPEPOS)
- Drive encryption
- Logical Block Protection (LBProtect)
- Write Once Read Many (WORM)
Obtaining the IBM Tape Device Driver
Download the driver from IBM Fix Central using the following path:
- Product Group → System Storage
- System Storage → Tape systems
- Tape systems → Tape drivers and software
- Tape drivers and software → Tape device drivers
- Select the appropriate platform for the device driver
Recommended Practice
Persistent naming is strongly recommended.
Persistent naming ensures that attached devices are always configured with the same logical name based on SCSI ID, LUN ID, and host bus adapter (HBA), even after system reboots. This helps prevent configuration issues.
