Error description
upport for auto-conversion of tagged z/OS UNIX input files to the compiler codepage, improved handling of data sets from cob2, and other improvements. More detail: 1) Support automatic codepage conversion of tagged z/OS UNIX input files (including UTF-8 files) to the compiler codepage before compilation. 2) Support for data set locations in the -I option of cob2. 3) Enhancements to -M option of cob2 for dependency files: i) -MF, custom dependency file name; ii) -MT, custom dependency target name. 4) New option TERM(SOURCELINE) option, results in diagnostic messages dumped to SYSTERM stream having user source file relative line numbers instead of listing-relative numbers, similar to the UNIX front-ends of other popular compilers (gcc, clang, etc.) 5) Miscellaneous improvements to cob2 interface to improve compatibility with xlc and gcc.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL who want support * * for automatic codepage conversion of tagged * * z/OS UNIX input files (including UTF-8 * * files) to the compiler codepage, as well as * * an improved experience when using cob2, * * including the ability to specify data set * * names for the -I option, the ability to have * * source-file relative line numbers for * * diagnostic messages sent to SYSTERM, and * * enhancements to the -M make * * dependency file option. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: New Function: * * 1. Support for automatic * * codepage conversion of tagged z/OS UNIX * * input files, including UTF-8 files, * * when the file codepage does not match * * the compiler CODEPAGE option value * * in effect for the compile job. * * * * 2. Enhancements to the -I option of * * cob2 to support PDS data set locations * * specified in the format * * "//<unqualified-data-set-name>" and * * "//'<qualified-data-set-name>'". * * * * 3. New compiler option TERM(SOURCELINE) * * which causes diagnostic messages sent * * to the SYSTERM stream to be prefixed * * with their user-source file name and * * source file relative line number. * * * * 4. Enhancements to the -M make * * dependency file option of cob2: * * a. Support for the -MF option * * (custom make dependency file * * name); and * * b. Support for the -MT * * option (custom make dependency * * target name). * * * * 5. Improved consistency of the cob2 * * interface with xlc, gcc and clang with * * respect to input/output file path * * handling (e.g., it is now possible for * * the input filename to be qualified with * * a relative path). * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the IBM-provided PTF. * **************************************************************** It has become increasingly common for source files to be stored in UTF-8 on z/OS UNIX but there was no way for users to compile such files directly in COBOL without first converting them manually to the EBCDIC compiler codepage. It was also not possible for users to specify data set locations for copybooks using the -I option of cob2 (the COPYLOC option was required, which is non-standard). Some users also want the ability to see diagnostic messages produced by the compiler reported with the name of the source file from where the bad line of code originated along with a line number relative to that source file. There was also no way for users to specify a custom make dependency file name or custom make dependency target for the -M option of cob2.
Problem conclusion
Temporary fix
Comments
The compiler was updated to add support for automatic codepage conversion of tagged z/OS UNIX input files, support for data set names in the specification of the -I option of cob2, support for user-source relative line numbers in diagnostic messages when the new TERMINAL(SOURCELINE) compiler option is in effect, new -MF and -MT cob2 options to allow specification of a custom make dependency file name and custom make dependency target, respectively, and improved input/output file handling for cob2. For a detailed description of the changes, please refer to the following sections in the Enterprise COBOL for z/OS 6.5 IBM Documentation online: 1.
