Security Bulletin
Summary
pip is used by IBM Cloud Pak for Data System 1.0 as the Python package installer for managing and installing Python software packages. Multiple vulnerabilities affect pip. CVE-2026-1703 involves a path traversal vulnerability where files from a maliciously crafted wheel archive may be extracted outside the intended installation directory, potentially allowing limited unauthorized file writes. CVE-2026-3219 relates to improper handling of concatenated tar and ZIP archives, where pip processes ambiguous archive files as ZIP regardless of file type, potentially resulting in incorrect or unintended files being installed. CVE-2026-6357 involves inclusion of functionality from an untrusted control sphere, where pip's deferred self-update check imports Python modules after wheel installation, allowing newly installed malicious modules to be imported during the update check process. CVE-2026-8643 relates to a path traversal vulnerability where console_scripts and gui_scripts entry points are not properly sanitized against the installation directory, allowing entry points to be installed outside the intended installation directory. These vulnerabilities could allow attackers to perform unauthorized file writes, install incorrect packages, and execute malicious code during package installation, potentially compromising the integrity of the system.
Vulnerability Details
CVEID: CVE-2026-1703
DESCRIPTION: When pip is installing and extracting a maliciously crafted wheel archive, files may be extracted outside the installation directory. The path traversal is limited to prefixes of the installation directory, thus isn't able to inject or overwrite executable files in typical situations.
CWE: CWE-22: Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal')
CVSS Source: cna@python.org
CVSS Base score: 2
CVSS Vector: (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:A/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/E:X/CR:X/IR:X/AR:X/MAV:X/MAC:X/MAT:X/MPR:X/MUI:X/MVC:X/MVI:X/MVA:X/MSC:X/MSI:X/MSA:X/S:X/AU:X/R:X/V:X/RE:X/U:X)
CVEID: CVE-2026-3219
DESCRIPTION: pip handles concatenated tar and ZIP files as ZIP files regardless of filename or whether a file is both a tar and ZIP file. This behavior could result in confusing installation behavior, such as installing "incorrect" files according to the filename of the archive. New behavior only proceeds with installation if the file identifies uniquely as a ZIP or tar archive, not as both.
CWE: CWE-434: Unrestricted Upload of File with Dangerous Type
CVSS Source: cna@python.org
CVSS Base score: 4.6
CVSS Vector: (CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/E:X/CR:X/IR:X/AR:X/MAV:X/MAC:X/MAT:X/MPR:X/MUI:X/MVC:X/MVI:X/MVA:X/MSC:X/MSI:X/MSA:X/S:X/AU:X/R:X/V:X/RE:X/U:X)
CVEID: CVE-2026-6357
DESCRIPTION: pip prior to version 26.1 would run self-update check functionality after installing wheel files which required importing well-known Python modules names. These module imports were intentionally deferred to increase startup time of the pip CLI. The patch changes self-update functionality to run before wheels are installed to prevent newly-installed modules from being imported shortly after the installation of a wheel package. Users should still review package contents prior to installation.
CWE: CWE-829: Inclusion of Functionality from Untrusted Control Sphere
CVSS Source: cna@python.org
CVSS Base score: 5.3
CVSS Vector: (CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:P/PR:H/UI:A/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/E:X/CR:X/IR:X/AR:X/MAV:X/MAC:X/MAT:X/MPR:X/MUI:X/MVC:X/MVI:X/MVA:X/MSC:X/MSI:X/MSA:X/S:X/AU:X/R:X/V:X/RE:X/U:X)
CVEID: CVE-2026-8643
DESCRIPTION: pip would treat console_scripts and gui_scripts as paths instead of file names without sanitizing the resolved absolute path to the installation directory, leading to entry points being installed outside the installation directory.

Disclaimer
According to the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) is an "industry open standard designed to convey vulnerability severity and help to determine urgency and priority of response." IBM PROVIDES THE CVSS SCORES ""AS IS"" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. CUSTOMERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF ANY ACTUAL OR POTENTIAL SECURITY VULNERABILITY. In addition to other efforts to address potential vulnerabilities, IBM periodically updates the record of components contained in our product offerings. As part of that effort, if IBM identifies previously unidentified packages in a product/service inventory, we address relevant vulnerabilities regardless of CVE date. Inclusion of an older CVEID does not demonstrate that the referenced product has been used by IBM since that date, nor that IBM was aware of a vulnerability as of that date. We are making clients aware of relevant vulnerabilities as we become aware of them. "Affected Products and Versions" referenced in IBM Security Bulletins are intended to be only products and versions that are supported by IBM and have not passed their end-of-support or warranty date. Thus, failure to reference unsupported or extended-support products and versions in this Security Bulletin does not constitute a determination by IBM that they are unaffected by the vulnerability. Reference to one or more unsupported versions in this Security Bulletin shall not create an obligation for IBM to provide fixes for any unsupported or extended-support products or versions.
