Abstract
Microsoft has announced the retirement of Exchange Web Services (EWS) in Exchange Online. IBM is transitioning our services to Microsoft Exchange Graph API in a phased approach.
Content
Effective June 7, 2026, IBM will begin using the Microsoft Exchange Graph API for customers with the following license types:
- Exchange Online Kiosk
- Microsoft 365 / Office 365 F1
- Microsoft 365 / Office 365 F3
Please note that if your organization does not use these specific licenses, or if the required Graph API permissions have already been consented, no action or re-authorization is necessary. This shift aligns with Microsoft’s plan to officially block EWS access for these license types by the end of June 2026. IBM is implementing these updates early to ensure a seamless transition. For more information, please refer to Microsoft’s documentation.
Product-Specific Updates & Required Actions
Starting June 7, 2026, the following changes will take effect.
Administrative Action Required: As part of this change, administrators must either re-authorize your IBM applications to grant the required Microsoft Graph permissions or update the required permissions for the custom Azure app (if using one).
IBM Storage Protect for Cloud Microsoft 365
- The Change: IBM Storage Protect for Cloud will automatically use the Microsoft Exchange Graph API for all mailboxes if an affected license type is detected. Due to API limitations, the first incremental backup job after the switch may take longer.
- Note: No additional configuration action is required beyond ensuring global Graph permissions are consented.
