Choosing how many cameras to use in your broadcast is important to the overall setup of your production. When deciding how many cameras you need, consider the following scenarios.
Note: The options listed below are not the only streaming options available, but will serve as good examples.
One Camera
Single-camera setups can be achieved with devices like the Teradek VidiU, which allows you to broadcast live video directly to the web without a computer. Some video cameras also come ready to broadcast to IBM Video Streaming directly from the camera's settings.
Pros
- One-camera broadcasts generally don't use much CPU resources from your computer
- Simple setup and operation
Cons
- Limited production value, as you will not be able to incorporate various shots into your stream
Two Cameras
Video production programs like Wirecast and OBS allow you to bring multiple cameras into your presentation and give you the ability to switch back and forth between camera shots.
Pros
- Increased production value
- Ability to add effects and transitions
- Dynamic camera switching
Cons
- Programs like these require a significant amount of CPU resources from your computer
Three or More Cameras
Multi-camera setups can be managed with professional solutions such as:
- A video switcher like TriCaster
- A capture card built into your computer with multiple video inputs
Pros
- High-grade production quality system
- Professional-level capabilities
Cons
- Tends to be an expensive solution, not suitable for those on a budget
