Error description

  • Enterprise COBOL V6.5 generates SYSADATA as RECFM=VB, but some
records have non-zero RDW (Record Descriptor Word) bytes 3-4 (ZZ

Bytes), where VB records are expected to have zeroes. The
SYSADATA header and records after the RDW is valid and intact.
This does not affect the content or use of SYSADATA files
outside of any third party applications which verify the RDW is
    correct.

Local fix

  • Apply the IBM provided PTF

Problem conclusion

  • The Record Descriptor Word for the RECFM=VB SYSADATA data set
was stored in two variables, one for bytes 1-2 of the RDW
containing the actual length of the variable length record, and
a second variable for bytes 3-4 which was not required but was
also not initialized. The compiler has been updated so that
bytes 3-4 of the RDW is always initialized to zero, before the
record is written to the SYSADATA data set.
