This article introduces the IBM Video Streaming Live Monitoring and Troubleshooting tool, which provides broadcasters with real-time visibility into stream performance, viewer activity, channel configuration, and platform health.
It explains how to access the monitoring console and use features such as buffering analysis, viewer metrics, authenticated user reporting, channel setup review, ECDN status monitoring, and troubleshooting tools to quickly identify and resolve live streaming issues.

 

The Live Monitoring and Troubleshooting tool replaces the previous Live Monitoring and Live Broadcasts menu items with a unified Live Monitoring menu in the dashboard.

This tool provides broadcasters with a real-time overview of live broadcast performance, platform status, viewer activity, and troubleshooting information.

Key Features

The Live Monitoring console provides access to information and tools such as:

  • Platform status overview
  • ECDN status
  • Support for multiple channels
  • Channel status and video recording status
  • Incoming video chunk length and buffering ratio information
  • Authenticated viewers, top domains, and top countries
  • Access to Chat, Q&A, Polls, Slides, Remote Console, and CTAs
  • Video player preview
  • Viewer-reported issues by location, ISP, CDN, or ECDN
  • Ability to find reports from a viewer using a specific SSO ID
  • Channel setup review, including transcoding and enabled channel features

 

Access the Live Monitoring Console

The Live Monitoring console provides a real-time, easy-to-understand overview of your network and stream while you are live.

To access it, open the Metrics and Monitoring section from the left side of your dashboard, then select Live Monitoring.

 

Overview Information

The Live Monitoring page displays important broadcast information, including:

  • Channel status: Shows whether the channel is live or off air, including the duration of the current broadcast.
  • Auto recording status: Shows whether automatic recording is on or off.
  • Incoming video chunk length: Helps monitor the consistency of the incoming broadcast stream.
  • Buffering ratio: Shows buffering information from both the broadcaster side and viewer locations.

 

Viewership and Engagement Information

Authenticated Viewers and Embedding Domains

The Authenticated Viewers and Embedding Domains tabs provide information about viewership and where the stream is being watched.

This includes details such as:

  • Active viewers
  • Viewer hours available on the account
  • Top domains where the stream is being watched
  • Top countries by viewership

 

Channel Setup

The Channel Setup tab shows the features enabled for the channel currently being monitored.

This tab can help you quickly review:

  • Password status
  • Embed restrictions
  • Channel features and locks
  • Transcoding status
  • Stream setup information

 

Stream Setup Information

The stream setup section provides basic configuration details for the current broadcast.

This may include:

  • Broadcast location
  • Encoder device type
  • IBM Video Streaming server location
  • Video codec
  • Audio codec
  • Resolution
  • Aspect ratio

 

Reported Issues

The Reported Issues tab displays viewer performance metrics and troubleshooting information.

This tab allows you to review how the broadcast is performing across:

  • Viewer locations
  • Internet service providers (ISPs)
  • CDNs
  • ECDNs

You can use this information to see how many viewers on a specific ISP are experiencing buffering in real time, or which ISPs or CDNs currently have the most viewers.

 

Video Player and Broadcast Tools

The Live Monitoring console includes a video player so you can preview the broadcast directly from the panel.

It also provides quick access to broadcasting tools, including:

  • Chat
  • Q&A
  • Polls
  • Slides
  • Remote Console
  • Calls to Action (CTAs)
