GitHub App Provider Not Visible Under Organization Providers in HCP Terraform

How To

Summary

When using the GitHub App integration in HCP Terraform, we may notice that GitHub no longer appears under Organization Settings > Providers. Attempts to reconnect GitHub may display a message indicating that the provider is already connected.

This behaviour is expected for GitHub App integrations because the authorization is managed on a per-user basis and is displayed under Account Settings > Tokens instead of the HCP Terraform Organization Settings section.

Objective

Help users understand where GitHub App integrations are displayed in HCP Terraform and clarify the difference between GitHub App authentication and legacy OAuth/PAT-based provider configurations.

Environment

  • Product: HCP Terraform
  • VCS Integration: GitHub App

Steps

  1. Log in to HCP Terraform (app.terraform.io).
  2. Click the user profile/avatar in the top-right corner.
  3. Navigate to:
    • Account Settings
    • Tokens
  4. Verify that the GitHub App connection is listed there.

Note:

  • GitHub App integrations are authorized per user.
  • They do not appear under:
    • Organization Settings > Providers

The Providers section only displays integrations configured using OAuth or Personal Access Token (PAT) authentication methods.
