How To
Summary
In the Maximo Renewable platform, tags displayed in the Trends view can be classified as either direct (source) tags or calculated tags.
Direct tags originate from field devices or SCADA systems and represent real-time measured values, while calculated tags are derived internally for analytics and KPI evaluation.
Calculated tags can be easily identified by the presence of the “fx” symbol next to the tag name when expanding devices in Trends.
These tags are configured using formulas and depend on other input tags. By reviewing the KPI calculation tags and their associated formulas, users can better understand how specific values are derived and how analytics are performed within the system.
Objective
The objective of this note is to help users easily identify and differentiate between calculated (fx) tags and direct (source) tags in the IBM Maximo Renewable Platform. It also aims to provide clarity on how calculated tags are derived using formulas and how KPI-related tags can be understood by reviewing their calculation logic.
This enables users to better interpret data, validate analytics, and use the Trends view effectively for monitoring and decision-making.
Steps
Step 1: Open Trends View
- Navigate to the Trends section in Maximo Renewable
This is where all device data and tags are visualized

Step 2: Expand the Device
- Select and expand the required device/asset
- You will see a list of all associated tags

Step 3: Observe Tag Symbols
Carefully check each tag in the list:
- Tags with no symbol → Direct (Source) Tags
- Tags with “fx” symbol → Calculated Tags

Step 4: Identify Calculated Tags
The fx symbol indicates:
- Tag is derived using a formula
- Used for analytics or KPI calculations
- Not directly coming from a sensor
Step 6: Refer to KPI Formula List
- Use the provided KPI calculation sheet/document: KPI Calculation.csv
- Match the tag name with its formula
- Understand:
- Input tags used
- Calculation logic
