IBM Robotic Process Automation (RPA) – Web Automation using Microsoft Edge WebDriver, across On-Premises and OCP environments.

Abstract

An issue introduced on April 8 following the release of Microsoft Edge v147 prevents IBM RPA from downloading new Microsoft Edge WebDrivers. This impacts all IBM RPA versions in all environments due to a breaking change in the Microsoft Edge WebDriver API.

Description

On April 8, Microsoft released Microsoft Edge version 147. This release introduced a significant change to the API previously used by IBM RPA to list and download Microsoft Edge WebDrivers. As a result, from April 8 onward, no new Microsoft Edge WebDrivers—including version 147 and later—have been downloaded in any IBM RPA environment, regardless of the IBM RPA version in use.

IBM is actively working on a fix and plans to include it in the following releases:

IBM RPA version 23.0.20.6
IBM RPA version 30.0.3

Impact by environment:

Pre-installed IBM RPA Server: Web automations using Microsoft Edge version 147 or later will fail. Automations using earlier Edge versions should continue working, as the corresponding WebDrivers were already downloaded prior to April 8.
New IBM RPA Server installation: All web automations using Microsoft Edge (any version) will fail, as no WebDrivers can be downloaded.

Recommended Action

SaaS Environment

No actions are required for IBM Robotic Process Automation SaaS environments.

On-Premises and OCP Environments

Customers can choose one of the following approaches:

Manually update the Microsoft Edge WebDriver on the virtual machines where the IBM RPA Client is installed (using the documented workaround).
Manually update the WebDriver on the IBM RPA Server so that client VMs can automatically download it (using the documented workaround).
Wait for the release of IBM RPA versions 23.0.20.6 or 30.0.3, which will include the permanent fix.
