Abstract
Potential Loss of Data can occur on an unexpected redundant power outage
Description
We are enhancing our detection of Backup Power Modules (BPMs) with insufficient charge capacity to prevent potential data loss during a power outage. To strengthen this protection, we are introducing an improved BPM run‑time test algorithm designed to more reliably identify BPMs that cannot sustain the required charge. These updates ensure we proactively safeguard data by addressing insufficient BPM charge conditions before they become a risk. This is a BPM age related issue and older systems are more exposed.
Recommended Action
Systems over 48 months old MUST plan to update code.
Note: Clients using Customer Code Load, MUST first install R9.4 SP4.2 - 89.44.17.0
Fix:R9.4SP4.3 - 89.44.25.0 (or newer).
Important Update (8/20/2026):
The BPM Firmware in R9.4 SP4.3 (89.44.25.0) is exhibiting unexpected behavior, leading to unnecessary BPM replacements.
89.44.26.0 is now available via RCL or SSR install that mitigates unnecessary BPM repairs. Customers that are not experiencing any BPM issues, or not concerned with false positive repairs, can stay on 89.44.25.0. Otherwise, move to 89.44.26.0 or 89.45.10.0.
Note: Both bundles include changes needed to mitigate CVEs mentioned in the following notification: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/7284322
With the mitigations in place, and not including the security fixes, the only differences between 89.44.17.x and 89.44.25.x and 89.44.26.0 is only one fix.
