Error description

  • Error Description
After OA63441, REPRO involving EA VSAM clusters containing
greater than 20 candidate volumes may execute for a longer
time frame with a higher amount of EXCPs. The amount of
volumes exceeds the capacity of a catalog workarea causing
REPRO to operate with a default number of buffers (2)
instead of a buffer number derived from the CI/CA of the
data set. In an extreme case where REPRO would otherwise
operate with 180 buffers but does so with 2, this can cause
a 5 minute REPRO job to execute 30 minutes or more. This
applies to both input and output.

    CATKEYS: IDC2026 IDCREPRO

    ANALYSIS:
If APAR OA63441 applied and REPRO to an Extended

Addressable VSAM cluster with greater than 20 candidate
    volumes executes longer than usual.

    F CATALOG,DUMPON(040,***,**) trap will produce a dump

    during REPRO execution

    KNOWN IMPACT:
IDCAMS REPRO runs for greater clock time and EXCPs

    VERIFICATION STEPS:
If APAR OA63441 applied and REPRO to an Extended

Addressable VSAM cluster with greater than 20 candidate
    volumes executes longer than usual

    PE INFORMATION:
    USERS AFFECTED:

APAR OA63441, PTFS UJ96783, or UJ96784 affects users of REPRO

    USER IMPACT:
APAR OA63441 fixed the problem it reported but introduced a new
    problem.

Local fix

  • STEPLIB to pre OA63441 SYS1.LINKLIB(IDCAMS). Reduce candidate
volumes on clusters. For DD allocation, add

AMP=(AMORG,'BUFND=ddd') where ddd is comparable to the CI/CA
    of cluster (review listcat)

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All DFSMS REPRO users of release V25 and *
    *                 higher affected.                             *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: After apply OA63441, REPRO had a *
    * performance issue when REPRO a VSAM *
    * data set which was EA and had more *
    *                      than 20 volumes defined it.             *
    ****************************************************************
It took a longer time for REPRO to be completed, because the
buffer size passed on to OPEN was set incorrectly. The buffer
was set incorrectly because a previous catalog call returned
an error due to insufficient work area size. The error caused
REPRO to branch out without setting the buffer size.

Problem conclusion

  • Provide a large enough work area for the catalog call to
    prevent the initial error.
