Error description

  • In complex IBM Storage Protect Server library sharing
environments, a tape volume status can unexpectedly be changed
to SCRATCH with the AUDIT LIBRARY command when the following
    condition is met:

A device class (XYZ) is removed from the library AAA by issuing
    the command :
    UPDATE DEVCLASS XYZ library=NEW-LIBRARY
and this NEW-LIBRARY is managed by a different library manager
    server.
    When the command :
    AUDIT LIBRARY AAA
is issued on the original library client server, some volumes
status can unexpectedly change to SCRATCH.

This happens when the audit library command tries to
synchronise the volume inventory and ownership of the library
    client server.
The operation detects volumes with device class XYZ which does
not exist anymore in the AAA library because of the previous
    UPDATE DEVCLASS command.
In that situation, the volume status will be set to SCRATCH for
the volumes belonging to the XYZ devclass.

If a tape volume containing valid data is incorrectly marked as
SCRATCH, it might get overwritten by any session or process
needing to write data on a new tape volume.

To help prevent such problems, a warning message should be
displayed whenever the AUDIT LIBRARY command is executed on a
    shared library (LIBTYPE=SHARED).

This warning should inform users that the tape status may change
to SCRATCH if the UPDATE DEVCLASS command is executed too early
during the setup of a new tape library or while reconfiguring an
    existing tape library.
