How does DataStax Astra on Google Cloud (CaaS) differ from DSE?

Troubleshooting

Problem

While you can run DataStax Enterprise (DSE) both on-premises and in the cloud, DataStax Astra on Google Cloud Platform provides the ability to create Apache Cassandra databases in minutes, with reduced complexity, fewer operational concerns, and an approachable entry point for developing your applications. DataStax Astra on Google Cloud is a powerful Database as a Service (DBaaS) solution that offers several key features and advantages:

  1. Serverless Databases and Private Endpoints: DataStax Astra supports serverless databases, which are elastic cloud-native databases that scale with your workload. This allows you to focus more on developing your application and less on your infrastructure costs. Additionally, you can connect to Google Cloud private endpoints via the Astra Portal for enhanced security. This feature is currently available only for serverless databases and the region for your private endpoint in Google Cloud and your Astra DB database must match.

  2. Customer Managed Encryption Key (CMEK): DataStax Astra DB enhances data security by allowing you to associate a Customer Managed Encryption Key (one per region) that you defined in Google Cloud’s Key Management Service (KMS) with a Customer Key that you create in Astra DB. This separation of lock and key is considered a best practice to secure data via encryption.

  3. Simplified Security and User Management: Astra DB provides a secure cloud-based database without dramatically changing the way you currently access your internal database. New user management flows avoid the need for superusers and global keyspace administration in CQL.

  4. Flexible Pricing: DataStax Astra DB offers three plans: Free, Pay As You Go, and Enterprise (annual commitment). Each plan is billed according to the Astra DB pricing, which is based on the Read and Write requests, data storage, and data transfer.

  5. Easy Management: With Astra DB, you can manage roles using the DataStax Astra DB user interface or the DevOps API. This allows you to manage unique permissions for users based on your organization and database requirements.

  6. Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) Feature: This organization-scoped Astra DB feature allows you to associate a Customer Managed Key (one per region) that you defined in the cloud provider’s Key Management Service with a Customer Key that you create in Astra DB.

In conclusion, DataStax Astra on Google Cloud offers a robust, secure, and scalable data management solution with a focus on simplifying database management and helping you focus on developing applications.
