  packed-decimal group data item with a null value, an 0C7 abend

Problem summary

  * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL 6.4 who are        *
  *                 compiling programs that contain JSON         *
  *                 GENERATE statements with the INDICATING      *
  *                 phrase, where the sending operand of the     *
  *                 JSON GENERATE statement contains subordinate *
  *                 numeric elementary items.                    *

  * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Users are encountering a program        *
  *                      runtime ABEND 0C7 during execution of   *
  *                      the JSON GENERATE statement when their  *
  *                      numeric (ZONED, PACKED-DECIMAL, etc)    *
  *                      items (subordinate to the sending       *
  *                      operand) contain invalid data, but are  *
  *                      using the INDICATING phrase to generate *
  *                      JSON null values instead of the values  *
  *                      of the numeric items. An example of     *
  *                      invalid data is LOW-VALUES,             *
  *                      HIGH-VALUES, or SPACES, when contained  *
  *                      within a ZONED or PACKED-DECIMAL        *
  *                      numeric item.                           *

  * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF.                      *

  The JSON GENERATE statement resulted in compiler generated code
  that did not correctly handle numeric items that had null
  indicators.
  

Problem conclusion

• The compiler was fixed to avoid the aforementioned runtime ABEND
  0C7.
