QMGTOOLS: History of Temporary Addresses (from CS data)

How To

Summary

This document shows how to use the IBM i Support Must Gather Tools (QMGTOOLS) to display the history of temporary addresses by extracting the temporary address count from Collection Services data (if CS data exists). This is useful in helping to determine how quickly Temporary Address have been used and if there are particular days or times when the usage jumps.

Steps

If you do not already have the IBM i Support MustGather tools installed, or it is not up to date, refer to the following document for install and update instructions -  https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/645929

The Temporary Address History tool can be initiated from the MustGather Data Collector menu -
GO QMGTOOLS/MG  =>  Internals  =>  Storage Management Menu  => History of Temporary Addresses

You can also run the tool directly - QMGTOOLS/TMPADRHST

If you use the menu option or F4 to prompt the command, you can specify one specific library, or a generic library prefix to search for CS data.  Otherwise the default is to search all libraries.

The tool will search for CS data file QAPMCONF in the specified libraries and generate a report similar to the following:

The data is sorted by date, from newest to oldest.  The listed columns are:
  • Library - Library where CS data file QAPMCONF was found
  • Member - QAPMCONF file member where CS data was found
  • System - System name where CS data was collected
  • Type-mod - The IBM system type and model number of where the CS data was collected
  • Serial - The IBM system serial number of where the CS data was collected
  • Vserial - The virtual serial number assigned to the IBM i partition (if it exists) where the CS data was collected
  • Date and Time - When the Collection Services collection was started
  • Remaining addresses - The number of available temporary addresses when the collection started
  • % used - The percentage of temporary addresses used (percentage of max 274,877,906,944 addresses)

Notes:
  - In IBM i 7.4 and later releases temporary addresses are reset every IPL.
  - CPI0997 message is issued when the system reaches 90% temporary addresses used.
  - The system WILL terminate if temporary address usage reaches 100%.
