Standalone tape drives - TS2230, TS2240, TS2250, TS2260, TS2270, TS2280, TS2290:

Collecting a drive dump using ITDT:

1. Start ITDT-SE, then type S and press Enter to scan for the devices.

2. Select the device that you want to retrieve a dump from by entering its number and pressing Enter.

3. Type D and press Enter to start the dump retrieval for the selected device.

Note: The Dump function stores one log file in the output folder of the program (*.blz).

Collecting a drive dump using the drive's "Service" port:

1. Connect an ethernet cable to the drive's ethernet port and to a computer.

2. Create an FTP session between the drive and the computer. The drive's IP address: 169.254.0.3

3. At the user prompt, type in "guest" and press Enter.

4. At the password prompt, press Enter. No response is needed.

5. Type in bin to set the communication mode to binary.

6. Type in mget *.dmp to transfer a drive dump to the computer.

7. The drive will ask if you want a forced dump. Type in "y" to force a dump and to transfer the forced dump to the computer.

Note: If a dump already exists, the drive will show you the dump name and ask if you want to transfer it to the computer. Type in "y" to transfer the existing dump or "n" to skip this dump file.

8. Type in "quit" to end the FTP session.

Storage Archive - Library Edition:

On Windows:

1. IBM Storage Archive LE automatically generates a log file **LogFile.csv** in the log folder **C:\Program Files\IBM\LTFS\log**

2. When IBM Storage Archive LE detects unexpected conditions, it also generates drive dump files in the same folder.

3. Compress these files into a compressed file and send it to your IBM service representative.

Note: For more information please see - When you cannot solve a problem on a Windows system

On Linux:

1. If the system log is enabled, the operating system automatically generates system log files userlog* in the directory /var/log

2. If these system log files /var/log/userlog* exist, compress them into a compressed file and send the file to your IBM service representative.

3. IBM Storage Archive LE automatically generates two tape drive dump files in the directory /tmp when it receives unexpected sense data from a tape drive.

4. Each dump file name includes a time stamp in the following formats: /var/lib/ltfs_yyyy_mm_dd_hhmmss.dmp and /var/lib/ltfs_yyyy_mm_dd_hhmmss_f.dmp

5. If these dump files exist, compress them into a compressed file and send the file to your IBM service representative.

Note: For more information please see - When you cannot solve a problem on a Linux system

Storage Archive - Enterprise Edition:

1. Use the ltfsee_log_collection command to collect data that you can review or send to IBM® support. The ltfsee_log_collection tool is in the /opt/ibm/ltfsee/bin folder. Use the following instructions to use the tool:

2. Log on to the operating system as root user, and open a terminal.

3. Start the tool by using this command: # /opt/ibm/ltfsee/bin/ltfsee_log_collection

4. Follow the onscreen prompts.

5. Make sure that a packed file with the name ltfsee_log_files_[date]_[time].tar.gz is created in the current directory. This file contains the collected log files.

Note: For more information please see: Log collection for failure analysis

TS7700:

If you are experiencing a performance issue on a TS7700, you have two options to collect system data for later troubleshooting. The first option, System Snapshot, collects a summary of system data including the performance state. This option is useful for intermittently checking the system performance. This file is built in approximately 5 minutes.

The second option, TS7700 Log Collection, allows you to collect historical system information for a time period up to the past 12 hours. This option is useful for collecting data during or soon after experiencing a problem. Based on the number of hours specified, this file can become very large and require over an hour to build.

Please visit the TS7700 - Data Collection page for detailed instructions.
