Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL 6.4 compiling * * COBOL programs that will be analyzed * * by IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z * * Code Optimization Advice and require * * more accurate matching of problem * * recommendations to user symbols. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: New function: A new option, * * SMARTBIN(NAMES|NONAMES), is * * provided to let users indicate that * * information about the names of * * user symbols should be added to * * the additional binary metadata. * * * * Since IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z * * Code Optimization Advice uses the * * names of user symbols in its report of * * problems in the source code, having * * this information included in the binary * * metadata in the COBOL modules will * * provide for more accurate matching * * of problem recommendations to * * user symbols. * * * * The default is SMARTBIN(NONAMES) * * which preserves existing behaviour. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF. * **************************************************************** Information about the names of user symbols is not currently available in the binary metadata, and is not needed by IBM Automatic Binary Optimizer for z/OS when using that product to automatically optimize COBOL modules. Users of IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z Code Optimization Advice are recommended to use this option to improve analysis results.

Comments
The compiler was updated to provide the SMARTBIN(NAMES|NONAMES) option. This option allows users to control the inclusion/ omission of information about the names of user symbols in the binary metadata. For a more detailed description of changes, please refer to the following section in the Enterprise COBOL for z/OS 6.4 IBM Documentation online: 1. Programming Guide -> Compiling and debugging your program -> COBOL compiler and runtime options -> Compiler Options -> SMARTBIN 2. Customization Guide -> Enterprise COBOL compiler options -> SMARTBIN
