AIX update(IJ#####.tar.gz) package of IBM® SDK, Java™ Technology Edition will be discontinued starting with the IBM Java 8 SR8 FP51 release in September, 2025. The last delivery which includes AIX update package is IBM Java 8 SR8 FP50.
On AIX, normally, two types of installp images for each Java release were made available till Java 8 SR8 FP50 release. One was the 'base' image (java8_64_installp_8.0.0.###.tar.gz) and the other was 'update' image(IJ#####.tar.gz). Base images contain the complete fileset, while update images carry only the delta needed to move from the prior level to the new one. We can use either of these images to upgrade Java install in the /usr/java8 or /usr/java8_64 location.
AIX Update package is used to upgrade, test and reject upgrade, if issues arise. The same task can be accomplished using the available IBM Java 8 base images by installing, testing, uninstalling a specific Java SR release and then reinstalling the desired Java SR release. Or users can also use available extractable IBM Java 8 tarballs (*.tar.gz) to install any available Java SR release to a desired location for testing purposes without disturbing the working install in /usr:
