Troubleshooting
Problem
When setting up IBM Content Collector to use Microsoft Exchange Online (Office 365) as the email source via Outlook 2016 (MAPI), the following error message appears:
“Your administrator has blocked this version of Outlook.”
“Your administrator has blocked this version of Outlook.”
Cause
- ICC relies on a locally installed Outlook client (MAPI) for email connectivity.
- Microsoft requires Modern Authentication (OAuth 2.0) for all Outlook clients connecting to Microsoft 365. Basic Authentication was permanently disabled on October 1, 2022.
- Older versions of Outlook 2016 (before build 16.0.4600.1000) do not support Modern Authentication for Microsoft 365.
- If the installed Outlook version is unsupported, the connection fails, and the above error is displayed.
Resolving The Problem
1. Check the Outlook Build:
- In Outlook, go to File → Office Account → About Outlook.
- Verify the version number.
2. Update Outlook 2016:
- Ensure Outlook 2016 is updated to build 16.0.4600.1000 or higher.
- Use one of the following supported channels:
- Monthly Enterprise Channel
- Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel
- Current Channel
- Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel
- Current Channel
3. Enable Modern Authentication in Exchange Online:
- Confirm that Modern Authentication (OAuth 2.0) is enabled for the tenant.
- For hybrid setups, ensure that the on-premises Exchange organization is also configured for OAuth if necessary.
4. Reconfigure ICC:
- Once Outlook is updated and Modern Authentication is enabled, try configuring the email source in ICC again.
- The error message should no longer appear.
