Migrating IBM Maximo Application Suite (MAS) across OpenShift Clusters

Question & Answer

Question

Is it possible to migrate an IBM Maximo Application Suite (MAS) instance from one Red Hat OpenShift (OCP) cluster to another?

Cause

IBM MAS does not support a native "lift-and-shift" migration mechanism between OpenShift clusters. However, organizations may need to move MAS/MAS application workload(s) due to infrastructure changes, cluster upgrades, or cloud provider transitions.

Answer

While a direct migration feature is not available, IBM MAS can be migrated across OpenShift clusters using its backup and restore functionality. This process involves:

  1. Preparing the target OpenShift cluster with all MAS prerequisites (OpenShift version, storage classes, etc.).
  2. Backing up the existing MAS environment, including configurations, persistent volumes, secrets, and databases.
  3. Reinstalling MAS on the new cluster using MAS CLI or Ansible automation.
  4. Restoring all backed-up data and configurations to the new environment.
  5. Validating the new setup through functional and integration testing.
  6. (Optional) Uninstall/ De-commission the old cluster once the migration is verified
