Affected Domain
Power10 systems with SR-IOV Shared Mode adapter configurations.
Abstract
We have recently discovered an issue where Power10 systems with SR-IOV Shared Mode adapter configurations may encounter an Incomplete state on firmware update to FW1060.50 or FW1050.50. A power off from ASMI and downgrade to previous firmware may be needed.
Description
Investigation, and determination of scope, is still in progress. This document will be updated as more information is available.
Power10 systems with SR-IOV Shared Mode adapter configurations are likely to encounter an Incomplete state on firmware update to FW1060.50 or FW1050.50. Hypervisor memory allocations are incorrectly calculated for SR-IOV Shared mode configurations, and may lead to Insufficient Hypervisor Memory errors returned to the HMC and a subsequent Incomplete state.
Scenario 1):
- Power10 server with NO SR-IOV Shared Mode adapters configured.
- System not immediately exposed by updating to FW1050.50 or FW1060.50.
- IBM still assessing the exposure, if any.
Scenario 2):
- Power10 server with NO SR-IOV Shared Mode adapters configured.
- System not immediately exposed by updating to FW1050.50 or FW1060.50.
- An attempt is made to switch an SR-IOV capable adapter from Dedicated Mode to Shared Mode.
- It is expected the switch will fail when it cannot allocate the inaccurately calculated amount of memory.
- If the SR-IOV Shared Mode is needed, IBM recommends downgrading to FW1060.41 or below, or FW1050.41 or below.
Scenario 3):
- Power10 server with SR-IOV Shared Mode adapters configured.
- Firmware is updated to FW1050.50 or FW1060.50.
- The server goes into an Incomplete state.
- Recovery: Server will need to be powered off from ASMI, and then the firmware downgraded to FW1060.41 or below, or FW1050.41 or below.
Scenario 4):
- Power10 server with SR-IOV Shared Mode adapters configured.
- Firmware is updated to FW1050.50 or FW1060.50.
- The server operates normally.
- IBM still assessing the exposure, if any.
- Out of caution, IBM recommends downgrading to FW1060.41 or below, or FW1050.41 or below.
Recommended Action
A fix for this issue is targeted for the next service packs.
