Steps

Removing a Hot-Swappable Hard Drive or SSD

Preparation

⚠️ Important: Only certified professionals should perform complex repairs. Basic maintenance should be done only if authorized by your product documentation or support team. Unauthorized servicing may void your warranty. Always follow the safety instructions provided with your system.

  • Review the safety guidelines.
  • Follow the steps outlined in the “Before working inside your system” section.
  • If present, remove the front bezel.
  • If necessary, remove the system cover to access internal hot-swappable drives.
  • Use your system’s management software to prepare the drive for removal. If the drive is active, its indicator light will blink while it powers down. Once the lights are off, the drive is safe to remove.

🔍 Refer to your storage controller documentation for more details.

⚠️ Data Protection: Ensure your operating system supports hot-swapping to avoid data loss. Consult your OS documentation for compatibility.

Procedure

  1. Press the release button to unlock the drive carrier handle.
  2. Slide the drive carrier out of its slot.

⚠️ Cooling Advisory: To maintain proper airflow and cooling, insert a blank into any empty drive slot if a replacement drive is not being installed immediately.

Preparation

⚠️ Important: Only perform installation tasks that are authorized by your documentation or support team. Unauthorized actions may affect warranty coverage.

⚠️ Drive Compatibility: Use only drives that are certified for use with your system’s backplane.

⚠️ Installation Caution: Ensure adjacent drives are fully seated before inserting a new drive. Attempting to lock a drive next to a partially inserted one may damage the hardware.

⚠️ RAID Configuration: Do not mix SAS and SATA drives within the same RAID volume.

⚠️ Data Advisory: When a replacement drive is inserted while the system is powered on, it may begin rebuilding automatically. Ensure the drive is either blank or contains data you intend to overwrite, as existing data will be lost.

Procedure

  1. If a blank is present in the drive slot, remove it.
  2. Insert the drive into the carrier.
  3. Press the release button and open the carrier handle.
  4. Slide the carrier into the slot until it connects with the backplane.
  5. Close the handle to secure the drive in place.
